I like running, but I think it is really a solo thing, not something I like to do in a group. She may feel the same way about it, or she may be concerned about looking to slow in front of you. If you really want to be active together, I would suggest another activity like raquetball or biking.

See what else she likes to do and encourage her to do that :-)
that is ridiculous.

of course she doesn't have to run, but she shouldn't not run because she is a woman!

I would say 6 out of 10 people who run end up with injury from it... jeez I would say even higher than that! If you have any dedication to the sport at all (and stick with it longer than a few weeks) you will of course be likely to sustain an injury at some time in your running 'career'.

Mike have you had any luck convincing her to be more active?

I'm a little curious about this myself. At first you said "research shows..." Now it came from a strength and conditioning coach. I don't doubt this is what he may believe, but I don't think I would consider an opinion "research" unless he has something to back that up.

Nonetheless, I am a runner in the Oklahoma City area. I am a member of the Norman Running Club and the Oklahoma City Running Club. All of our female runners would be highly offended by this statement. Running is not a male/female sport. It is a sport period. As with any sport, proper nutrition, proper hydration, and proper training are all key elements in reducing the probability of injury.

The bottom line is not everyone will enjoy running and she may be one of those people. If the main goal is to find a physical activity you can do together and both enjoy, it's out there. You just have to look for it. Because after all, the most important thing is spending the time together.

Just my two cents.

Women are more prone to injury when running for a few reasons. The most obvious is our hip to knee ratio. The second most obvious is bone density. Yes, the pounding increases bone density, but our hormones are different than men. I don't know how old she is, if she's had kids, but there are a lot of factors. Women also need to be more particular with their shoes as most women pronate and are someone knock-kneed. So add my list to those who say women, statistically, will EVENTUALLY show more injuries or irritations from running.

I hate running, always did, don't promote it, think it's not healthy, and yet respect the fact people who get off on it,....hey, that's your thing. Personally I don't think it's worth the pounding damage done to the body. I don't need a lecture on technique either.

Why do you feel the need to make her run with you. She doesn't want to do it so just let it go.

If you want the 2 of you to do something relating to fitness together, take up tennis, racquetball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, biking,.....why does it have to be running? Because you like it?

Find out what she likes and you join her.

Case solved.

I understand what you're saying here, but it just sticks in my craw when guys say women shouldn't run, or women shouldn't do this or that because we're somehow too fragile for it. I believe the benefits of running outweigh the risk of injury. We'll agree to disagree, but I'll admit you're much more knowledgeable than I and much more qualified to opine.

I'm with you on that one too. Unless someone has something like osteoporosis or brittle bone disease or even hypertonia (which I've got a client with, we just use care),....the whole "women are too fragile thing" pisses me the right off. Bear in mind I'm a chick with a lot of muscle, who rides a motorcycle, shoots weapons, rides horses, lifts weights,.....(does that make me less of that fragile female?)

It's like being hugged as if you're made out of china or porcelain. Meh. Different examples but same end result.
