Pear shaped?

Hi im 18 years old and I really don't know what my body shape is,I've got a small top half and a small bottom half.I am a petite size 8 but tend to put weight on around my hips and stomach. My hips are wider.Does this make me a pear shape?I know this sounds confusing but any ideas?thnx

No, pear shapes have big hips and big thighs, especially in the saddlebag area.

The way you store fat sounds more "apple shape". Why do you ask?

Getting fit can help you no matter what your tendencies are.

Welcome to DF.

Yeah, I'd go with apple or lollipop shaped from your description.

Any shape we have, we can make more to our liking and make ourselves more healthy with proper motivation, diet, and exercise.

Welcome aboard.

Another thing, you may just be bloating which girls find more noticable in the abdominal region.

First of all, welcome to DF!

What do you mean when you say target specific areas? Spot-reducing is not possible, but, like others have said, a sensible training program will definitely make you look better and more fit.

Ditto the welcome to DiscussFitness.

The amount of food we eat and our fitness and life activities determines if we add weight and fat to our bodies. Our genetics determines the areas we are predisposed to store it. Understanding both of these factors will help you in your fitness journey.

The best fitness plans for shaping and toning that I have seen are not based on body "shape". I have actually read some pretty poor advice on exercising based on body shape!

Nothing will tone you like full body workouts whether you split them over a few sessions or design them all in one day. Just make sure your plan has a cardiovascular conditioning (aerobic) component to it, a strength component and a flexibility/stretching component to it. If you need specific suggestions just ask.

Welcome! Glad to have you here. The shape you are should not determine the type of workout you do. If you hold fat in a certain area doing exercises for that area of the body won't reduce the fat you hold there. Strength training should be done for ALL muscle groups. Strength training, combined with cardiovascular exercise and proper nutrition will help you lose fat and look fit all over. Unfortunately it can't be lost just from the areas you want to lose it. Getting that toned look will be done by adding a bit of lean muscle mass and then losing some of the fat that is covering it. Sarah
