Protein problem

My diet is very repetitious and I am bored with it, but it has worked for me. I've been trying to incorporate new protein rich foods into my diet. I came across imitation crab meat, but the only downfall is that it is high in sodium, as is the packaged tuna. I rinse my tuna off numerous times to eliminate some of the salt and am wondering if it would work the same for the crab meat???

I wouldn't worry about it. Your body still has to have a certain sodium level to opperate efficiently. Don't go overboard.

Sorry to break this into two replies, but what other sources of protein are you consuming? Whey protein isloate shakes are great, as well as egg whites, and ocean caught fish such as Salmon. And on occasion, lean meats such as vennison, lamb, and turkey could be an option.

are u a vegetarian? (well i mean... a veggie who eats fish obviously lol) If not, then eat meat! There are tons of different meats, varying in leanness, to choose from - no need to get bored!

If u dont eat meat, then there are tons of types of FISH u could eat. Also, can get protein from egg whites as gal016 says, egg yolks too, and of course supplement such as whey protein, soy protein, casein etc in shake form are options. How about different types of beans, tofu, nuts&seeds (yes i know the latter are high in fat but just work your other macros around this)

veggie or not, there are tons of different options for protein sources - there should be no need to have to resort to something called 'imitation crab meat' (ive never heard of this but what is it made of anyway?)

As for the sodium - yes you need a certain amount in your diet, just keep track of how much u have on a regular day - take into account the sodium in processed foods such as bread and packaged soups etc ( )- and see whether your sodium levels are high or not.

good luck!

I'm with minime. As long as you watch your overall sodium intake then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Canned soups are *very* high in sodium, as are some veggie drinks such as V8.

minime is right on. if you are looking for something veggaterian with a lot of protein try this veggie chili. it's quick to make, tastes really good and is packed with protein. not to mention the sodium is much lower then canned soups, just use low sodium veggie broth inplace of the beer, and low sodium canned beans.

Imitation crab meat is usually made from fish, often pollack. It's quite yummy.:

but it's still not as healthy for you as most other kinds of fish.

Thanks for the replies!
To answer some of your questions...I'm not a vegetarian, but I do not eat red meat. I eat a lot of chicken breast, tuna, egg beaters, tofu, cottage cheese, veggies, and most recently the crab meat...overall, I'm a "clean" eater. I have been a gym rat for the past 3 years and my obsession stems from an eating disorder I had about 4 years ago. I've fine tuned the body, but it is a constant battle with the mind...if anyone can relate...
I know I'm not the only one out there who suffers from, for lack of a better word, gas, due to all of the "good" foods I eat (Beano has been my new best friend), but it can be quite frustrating when you want to get that hard cardio workout in and you feel so uncomfortable. I am so careful about everything I put in my mouth.

The only advice I have is this and its simple:

Really listen to your body and how it reacts to the food you feed it.
If you pay attention you'll know what to eat and what not to eat. While some foods may seem very healthy, they may not react well with your type of body chemistry. So just be more in tune...and think about how you feel after a meal.

There are lots of other protein options. There are so many leans meats. I can't eat chicken all the time. I get sooo sick of it! I eat a lot of turkey. Egg whites are a great choice. Cottage cheese is a good one as well. Ostrich is quite good, venision, shrimp, scallops, trout, buffalo. Give some other meats a try for variety.
