push-ups

hello everyone!

i have been having some trouble with push-ups

I currently do not do them everyday and was wondering if maybe it was a good idea to start

I need to do 18 flat with no problem for the Trooper physical (which I have no idea when or if I will even get that far) but I want to be prepared and a little more so

anyone have any advice/suggestions?

Like anything else just get started and progress, working at them consistently. When I decided I wanted to improve my pushup stamina, I did them every other day - 3 sets to failure starting with girl- push ups (on knees). When I could do 15 in one set I switched to standard pushups for the sets I could. When I wanted an extra challenge I would do feet up on a box push ups.

When I started crossfit I found out that my pushup form stunk because my hands were too wide. So I corrected my form and got back to basics progressively building up stamina.

Like anything, have patience, work at it until your efforts are unproductive in that session and get back to it at your next scheduled time to practice.

you aren't the only one with pushup problems! I keep planning to do them every day but don't get around to it.. then a pushup-heavy workouts comes up and I suck as badly as ever! I don't understand why my chest is so weak!

Linda, how wide is too wide? I bet my hands are too wide too, i have them outside of shoulder width.

I suppose doing the bench press would help too with pushup strength.

just space them evenly away from body i usually have my the same as if i was bench pressing just upside down, have them out horizontally till biceps and triceps are horizontal.

Don't worry if you do put your hands out to far, because it'll work your chest more for bench press and to far in will work your triceps more.

When you get better at them, then proceed to putting legs on something high and putting your hands on the floor and making yourself push more body weight. Then after that you can add weight in a vest or backpack which is even harder.

But Yes dont worry i remember back in the day when i couldn't do many but after practice they are now easier

but if your really worrying about your posture while doing a push up, best thing is to politely ask someone to check if your doing them correctly and your posture.

If you want to be able to do many push-ups you just need to start training and do 5-6 days a week your push ups. Try to build up your push ups gradually, 3-4 sets a day if you can. Start with girl push-ups and as soon as you are able to do 5 regular push ups, switch to that. There one try to add one push-up every other training session to your sets. First 5 push ups, then 6, 7, 8.. etc. Push ups are just all about doing them! Doing bench press or similar exercises will also help.

do 1 pushup, get on your knees and push your hands up(like a military press) 1 time. then do 2 pushups, push your hands up in the air 2 times. repeat until you cant go anymore. trust me this works. i am a beast (lol) at pushups and these work you.
