Hey buddy, glad to hear that your parents ok'd and do support your interests in bodybuilding, good stuff! Yes, I would definitely try to join a gym, as a gym will provide you with everything you need to get the most from your workouts. I would visit a few well known gyms and see which atmosphere you like the best, check out the equipement and make sure they have all the basics, at the very least, then decide.
As far as a guy or gal personal trainer, well, that is up to you. Again though, I would meet with a few trainers to see how they are, what their background is, and then determine whether or not they know what they are talking about. Appearance is a good indicator too. Some trainers "claim" to have this and that education wise etc. etc., and specialize in this or that, but by looking at them, you'll KNOW if they have actual EXPERIENCE in what they preach to others. If they are out of shape, obviously they don't practice what they preach, and if they do, I wouldn't count on them preaching very informitive information. So just check a few trainers out, whether you go with a guy or girl, well that is up to you to decide. I would say the practical and first-hand knowledge aspects of the trainer should be more of an important factor than gender. Hope that helps some! Good luck with beginning your quest to new health and a new body! You are making a wise investment!

This may be an argument on vernacular but here goes:
I don't think it's necessary to work with a trainer whose PERSONAL GOALS are identical to yours.
I do, however, think it's most beneficial to work with a trainer who does seem to specialize in what area of fitness YOU are interested in.
An 80 year old woman may or may not be the most help,..... THAT isn't the issue.
What IS the issue is if the trainer (whether this person is male or female, 20 or 80) can help you, if your personalities are compatible, if they have a good knowledge and teaching style (in the area you're interested in),....
But I do agree that it's a good thing to check around with a few different gyms and interview a few different trainers.
Some gyms may try to "assign" you a trainer. Sometimes it works (they know their staff and may make a good arrangement for you), but it wouldn't hurt to also interview 2 or 3 different trainers in 2 or 3 different gyms.....Even if they're a walking pilar of fitness, if you two don't mesh, it won't matter diddly.

Get a man, you don't need any distractions while lifting...cuz there's a ton of hott trainers out there!! I got a man just so I could keep my focus when I started lifting. And, a man could relate to you more and could probably answer you questions better, seein how he's probably been through it.

haha, well i would see if you could find one man/woman that used to be into the sport of body building, because they know exactly whats up with how to tweak your body, alot of trainers dont know anything, especially at my gym 24 hour fitness, but they claim they do.

The gender doesn't matter. If the trainer is a female (and a good trainer), I wouldn't worry about distractions. She'll have you sucking wind so that you won't have the energy for distractions.
Seriously, hiring a trainer is a smart move. He/She will help you sort out all of the gym equipment which can be intimidating to someone first going to a gym.

Hey go easy on that female trainer bashing and the old stuff too I'm half way there.
Quote from Merrida: "What IS the issue is if the trainer (whether this person is male or female, 20 or 80) can help you, if your personalities are compatible, if they have a good knowledge and teaching style (in the area you're interested in),...."
Everyone has a different teaching style, just like everyone learns differently. You have to be able to ask questions so you don't want someone shoving their weight training beliefs at you. Being heard is as important as listening.

At 14 you're still going through lots of hormonal changes. And, your body is growing lots. I think that you should get a personal trainer who is very knowledgable and experienced and RESPONSIBLE in terms of working with youth
