Soy Protein
What do you ladies think about protein from soy sources? I've heard that guys should stay away from it but what about women?

The whole "increases estrogen" is highly overrated in men. I think it is an individual thing that each man should find out for himself instead of take the news as facts. For women, I don't see it as a negative thing at all. I eat it almost daily.

I eat kashi golean cereal which has soy protein in it, and i also like to eat soynuts as a snack sometimes. And most protein bars have soy in them also.
I know there are studies that say it is bad for you... but I havent read these studies
Truth is, if u look for it, you can basically find information that will tell u that practically everything you eat is bad! Dairy is bad it will kill you... Meat is bad it has saturated fat, and too much protein is bad for you... Coffee causes cancer... coffee prevents cancer...
who to believe

I use soy milk when I need to make a smoothie or eat cold cereal, but I don't really care for it as a protein source. I try to avoid it everyday but then I am estrogen sensitive. I find tofu especially bothersome and have it only a few times a year for variety. I find soy products seem to be good protein when mixed with real meat such as boosting the protein content in chilis and stew or stir fries. On their own they really lack in satisfaction for my body.

lol so true minime. i can't keep up anymore.
i have soy milk in my latte, and like minime said protein bars have soy in them, but as for say a portien shake i perfer whey. i've never really thought of soy as a main protein source, but more as a small bonus if added to something,if that makes any sense.

i would not use soy protein shakes as my only experience with a soy protein powder was absolutely vile! I think whey as a protein powder is MUCH more palatable!
Ive never tasted soy milk - but i have looked at the nutrient breakdown and doesnt it have less protein than cow's milk?!
gymgirl why do u have your latte with soy milk instead of regular skim? do u prefer the taste? Or do u try to limit your dairy?

I drink soy milk on occasion and sometimes use it instead of 1% milk for my protein shakes. It's good for variety. Plus, the chocolate soy milk is Y-U-M-M-Y. As for protein content compared to milk, I'm not sure. But I have found that it can fluctuate from brand to brand.

I don't think this is an "either - or" question.
Soy is a definately an alternative in your choices for source of protein.
I wouldn't exclude it but neither would I rely on it solely.

that is a great question minime, that honestly i do not know the answer to! i think i used to believe it was better for you/women, and i started getting it in my chai tea latte years ago...just haven't stopped. weird, maybe i should go back to non-fat. i'm going to look at the starbucks nutrtion breakdown and see which has more protein.

I use soy products in moderation. No fat soy milk for cereals, occasional tofu, soy nuts and occasional soy mock meat but only the higher protein and because they are sooooooo high in sodium it is not often.
