That's what I tell DH when he asks why I don't wear underwire bras. I mean, he doesn't wear a wire in his underwear. I'm only a B, so draw your own conclusions about who needs more support.

I think every man should have to wear an underwire jock strap at least once in their life to juuuust get an idea of one of the many things we do. Yep.

No woman should have to be wired up for the sake of fashion.
So I vote that all women go braless from now on. When I'm made supreme ruler of the world...that will be my first decree. My daughters, and the numerous other girls that I've kind of raised will all wear burkas...everyone else will wear loose tee shirts and no bras at all. Be free ladies, be comforatable....and run a lot.

Just kidding you know. I understand the discomfort of going without and of wearing the wrong one. Remember that most of my friends are women, most of my training partners have been women, and most of those I now train...yep, women. Oh and all of my family has been or at least women and girls.

So then, Supreme Ruler,....no "lifting & separating" for you, eh?
I can't believe they actually make underwire sports bras. That sort of negates the idea of a sports bra, doesn't it? It's one thing to be smooshed together, but those bloody wires can take a hike....

haha...nope. Just natural and comfortable. And preferably small enough to be.... uh oh, never mind, way off topic here. There is a reason why in my younger days when I was dating I never liked going out with anyone over 5'4" and when I married...she was 5'0". Although I have to admit, she was so damn cool that I'd have married her even if she'd been a 6'4" amazon beast.

The thing about being 5'1" is the world is "tall" by comparison,.....
But back on topic, has any woman found a decent sports bra that does NOT have one of those supposed built in bras? Most of the ones I've run into have these very small shelf bras built in, which amount to a separate, elastic piece of material that is too short, rides up, doesn't fully cover/support, etc.
So are there any out there that maybe just escaped my search, that are just more like tops to wear under your workout shirt, that aren't trying to serve a dual purpose (ie: a bra within a sports bra type of thing)?

The champion one I have doesn't do that, it's just a sports bra, no seperate pieces or anything. It's good support - everything's squished, but not to the point of not being able to breathe.

I don't wear a fancy "sports bra", just a well fitting regular bra and a sports top over top, then a T-shirt. I have to have underwires. I've got no choice.
If the cup size is right and the band is correct, you'll never be bothered by the wires (I alter my own bras so that the band fits nice and snug). Most women wear too small of a cup and too large of a band.

I've tried to wear underwire bras, and I've even been fitted, but I just can't adapt. I've heard they can take some getting used to, but I've yet to adjust. The wires have poked out of the fabric and torn their way through (yeah, that's comfy). So I've ripped the wires out.
Honestly I was just trying to find a non-bra. A top that was nothing resembling a bra, that I could wear under my clothes to keep things in check. I understand with wires the purpose is not to put the strain on the straps (they shouldn't be doing the support, and the wires are there to provide this support so you don't inadvertently tighten up the straps), but I still think I'd be much more comfortable if I could find some type of firm top designed along the lines of a tank, to wear beneath my gym clothes, and also not worry about the straps falling down across my shoulders while I'm lifting.
Such a simple thing, and yet for some it turns into this overly complex tactical shopping endeaver.

Not me. No wires here. I had one once in high school and hated it. I just wear plain elastic and cotton.

my boobs are 36G - I have no choice but to wear an underwired bra!
I wear the Fantasie range - currently Helena. Do you have that brand in the States?
It's well fitting, supportive and doesn't look too much like scaffolding. I couldn't go braless; I'd have someone's eye out

Amanda, I'll have to try this out because it sounds more along the lines of what I'm looking for. I need to wear a sports bra, and not a regular bra, even though I do not run, and I can handle being smooshed, but it was those,....hmm, I don't know what they call them, shelf bras, or bra tops, something like that,...but those bras within the top, those things. (Excuse my lack of eloquence here, I don't often discuss bras). But those things hurt because they wouldn't cover everything, and just come down half way and ride up forming a ridge somewhere around,...my clavicles and arm pits.
So my choices were those, or underwires, and I say: Just say "no" to underwires. I understand how they're "supposed" to support, but man, they're bad enough when you're not lifting, but when you ARE working out, I spend more time digging at my wires......

Merrida, have you ever been fitted properly for a bra? It makes an enormous difference when you wear the correct size!
