Temporary weight gain from weights?

Hey guys.. quick question..

I've been working out consistantly..mainly cardio.. and great diet,
and lost a few pounds.. For the past 2-3 weeks I've added weight training to my routine, and noticed a nice "lift" in my glutes..and generally a better all over tightness to my body.. The only thing is.. I have gained 2 pounds!!!.. annd I am pissed! I do feel a bit swollen, and not sure if this is right.. but, I have heard that when you begin weight training, sometimes there is a temporary weight gain, or swelling of the body.. and that subsides after the first few months.. is this true??? Or, do I just need to tighten up on my diet??

(yes, I'm one of those freaks that thrives off seeing the scale numbers go down!!.. I am a slave to my scale! haha..)

Thx! ;-) FemCat

FemCat, if you're building muscle you can gain weight, but it's good weight. I would throw that scale in the trash pretty much and keep lifting

What does your diet and workout routine look like? Scale weight means nothing compared to bodyfat. Has your bodyfat changed?

Thx guys.. ;-) I eat really well.. I am just too against counting calories, or "dieting".. per say. I eat 5 small meals a day.. sometimes less or more, depends on the day, and I try and eat less at nite. Most of my carbs come from fruits, and non wheat, gluten or yeast rye bread.. which I usually will just have a slice a day...
I eat chicken breast, lean meats and tunafish..non-sweetened yogurt with almonds and splenda, soy protein..etc.. and veggies, like green beans, zuchinni, carrots, and salads.
Once a week or so.. I will have some sushi or a pad thai- low oil and no sugar.
I am in the restaurant business.. and I love food..so, we do go out a few times a week and visit other restaurants... I just try and keep everything in moderation, and stay clear of bread, rice, potatoes, dessert and heavy fats.

I do cardio 40 mins or so 4-5 x a week.. and weights now 3x a week.
I'm probably going to start taking 2 dance classes a week.. and drop 1 cardio session.

I have no idea what my body fat is!! Prety dumb..huh! I need to go get a test done somewhere.

Thx for the advice ladies.. I will put the scale away for now.. cuz, each time I weight myself in the morning, if it's not good.. I'm in a bad mood for the day!

You sound like you are doing the right stuff. Just be patient and consistent and it will happen.

PS: You may drop your bodyfat way down and not reach the 120 goal. I weigh 120 and I am only 5'-4". I have however, dropped my bodyfat from 26% to 15%. This means I have added lots of muscle mass while losing fat.

hey guys, I am new to this. But I was reading FemCats post, seeing that I myself kinda have the same problems. As a matter of fact I stopped weight lifting because I got so mad at the scale. I am currently 5'6" and weight 150. Last time I got a fat % test it was 19%. However my size has not changed as far as clothing, and my definition is not what I would have thought it would be with my current body fat %. Right now I am doing cardio kickboxing three times a week. And a resistance band class twice a week ( have not been to faithfull to this class). Is it possible to gain that much muscle to decrease body fat % and not lose inches and not lose weight but gain instead... Also what should I do to increase muscle and lose inches as well as weight?

Yes, lots of things are possible. I would increase the resistance training to heavier weights and do it three times per week. Diet is the most significant factor.

Fem - not real accurate. I use them to see if there is any changes. I haven't changed much lately but I have been highly stressed.
