Training in pregnancy

I have been training on and off for nearly 4 years now. I have had a bit of a lull over the Christmas period and put on about half a stone. I am now trying to get myself back into my usual routine. The question I would like to ask is that I am planning on trying for another baby from about May. I would like to lose this half a stone and get back to my lean shape before then. I would like to carry on with my fitness routine throughout my planned pregnancy though first time round I stopped at 3 months. Too tired! I had quite a large baby (9lb 6 and I'm just 5'1) so you can imagine how ridiculous I looked. Does anyone out there have any experience of lifting weights during pregnancy and of a good routine when pregnant. Also I got so big that my tummy muscles split more than average and I had problems after my 1st in that area that I would like to avoid again if I could.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Currently am trying to get back to (x3 week around 40 mins weights/40 mins cardio).

Well I don't have any experience in this department, but I have been searching for useful tips for my sister, she is 6 months pregnant, and the link below is something that I found for her. Hope this helps.

Thanks AnnaD the site you recommended seems quite informative and I will certainly read up on it.

I asked the same question when I first started here. If I remember correctly, there are some good links in this thread.

When I got pregnant with my oldest I was pretty heavy into weight training. I lifted (including squats) through my sixth month of pregnancy. However, I kept the weights lighter than usual, and never did any lifting on my back (cut's off oxygen to baby I was told). My routine was basically a simple full body workout (squats, lunges, flys, bpress, dbcurl, etc) 3 days per week. I also jogged three times per week and swam three times per week. I drank healthy shakes every morning (milk, oranges, ice, wheat germ), and ate five BIG meals a day.

At seven months I thought that I should cool it on the lifting so I changed my routine to this:
Walk up the mountain every day (pretty big moutain trail, but well paved)
Swimming exercise classes three time/wk
Upper body exercises (lite dbell type stuff)

I gained 40 pounds while I was pregnant, but mostly because I ate like two full grown football players. However, once the baby was born I was in my old string bikini within a week! And I didn't get any stretch marks or anything like that. And the birth was a piece of cake - I attribute much of my quick rebound to the way I took care of myself (though the fact that he was my first child probably had a great deal to do with it also). I'm 5'5" and the baby was 8.5 pounds. I had him TOTALLY natural - no shots or drugs. . . I guess that I was luck to be born with "baby bearing" hips. Shee-it! I can pop em out like a pez candy dispenser

With my second child I was lazy. I got fat, and pretty much haven't been back in shape since. Now that I'm back in the gym I can feel my "muscle memory" coming back, and I love it!

I think that you should probably talk to your doctor before you lift too much. Make sure you have a strong uterus and all that. . .

Thanks for all the advice. Am going to try my best to keep up the training and that I don't get as tired and big as last time and I have to say I've never come across a pregnant woman in the gym before. Hmm don't want to scare too many people away who might think I'm mad and should be at home with my feet up but I cannot face not doing any exercise for about a year again like last time. Takes too long afterwards to get back in shape. Fingers crossed.

Really?!?! What city/state do you live in? Where I live I frequently see pregnant women in the gym. No - I'm not in Southern California (at least not anymore)

Well I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I'm afraid the fitness thing only started catching on here from about 1999 when we only had leisure centres to go to. Then the gyms started opening (Fitness First/LA Fitness) don't know if you've heard of them. I can honestly say that a pregnant woman working out here would get a lotta looks.... as if `My goodness is she still able to' or `my god, is she lifting weights is she crackers'.... lol (only caught on to this phrase a while ago)...... I work in a Solicitors office and I would say that yes the men keep fit but the women say 1 in every 10 exercise....

My baby girl as I said was 9lb 6 not huge but big enough. She definitely wasn't fat and just because you're big at birth doesn't mean you're fat (must be big boned). She is now 4 and barely 3 stone and is a beautiful little lean machine just like her daddy....
