Fair, but my point is that there is "nothing new under the sun". I know why they look the way they look but, there is nothing special or new about it. These people dellude themselves into thinking that by dressing and presenting themselves the way they do, somehow validates them as a person. Everyone wants to be accepted and be "a part of something", but in doing so they usually lose more of themselves than find. Everyone has to believe in something but you don't need to blow a horn to make those beliefs and morals count.

I am smiling while I write all that. I do think it is the whole "tribal dress" sort of thing. When I was a teen wearing denim blue jeans was what made us distinctly different from our parents then it was whatever major you took at college. Wearing your TI calculator on your belt and carrying a brief case if you were an engineer, doc martins and black glasses if you were in architecture or women's studies, being fashion correct and acting snooty/arrogant if you were an arts major, etc.

Common we all do it in the gym now too. It used to be lycra outfits for women in the eighties. Now it's spagetti strap bra tops for the not so intense and T-shirts and shorts for the serious. Aerobic minded and already conditioned wear flat chests, crop tops, defined abs and running shorts. The rest of us wear yoga pants. (That reminds me I need to buy new workout clothes). The guys all wear T-shirts with pro basketball team names or elite college team names on them... This is "the dress code" for my gym. I'm sure powerlifting gyms or mommy gyms have their own tribal norms.

Yes they are expressing which group in society they belong to. It's human nature, but sometimes it has irony (like creative people who are not so creative in the way they dress). I worked with one marketing manager working in the field of design and decor, very productive yet she only owned clothes in black and winter-white. She had issues with colour. LOL
