2007 Men's Health Urbanathlon results
This past Saturday I ran the 2007 Men's Health Urbanathlon in NYC. It was an amazing race and I can't wait to run it again next year. Surprising given that fact that my training was non-existent in the weeks leading up to the race (i.e. I went to the gym twice since mid-August). As such, my cardio conditioning was poor and my weight was up (200.5 lbs morning of the race - I usually compete around 175-180). Also having never run a race longer than a 5K, the 8 mile run plus 52 story building climb and the various obstacles throughout the race posed quite a challenge.
I finished the race well under two hours, which was my goal (the winner finished the race in 1 hour, 38 seconds). The weather was ideal (low to mid 60s and sunny). The running portions of the race were easy and beautiful (a flat course through Central Park and down to Batery Park along the Hudson). The obstacles were a lot of fun and I had no problem with any apparatus. The 52-story stairclimb up 7 World Trade Center was brutal (it came at the 7 mile mark of the race), but I paced myself well and made it up and down in under 24 minutes.
I am having severe DOMS in my legs (not surprising) and I have not been sleeping well due to the pain and my reluctance to take any pain meds. Also not helping is the fact that I have started my pre-competition cutting diet for the powerlifting competition in which I am scheduled to compete at the end of this month. So I am in pain, tired and hungry. But again, I had a wonderful time and look forward to doing the race again next year.
