I've witnessed a 17 year old do that with over 220lbs, and I've seen another way were they rest the bar on the stomach then get each arm (one at a time) under the bar (crook of the arms) and lift it to the chest.

it uses up too much energy, the straight clean is the best way, but it's very tough on the grip, if a lifter isn't well practiced with a 2"bar thier stuck trying to find odd ways to get it to the chest, thank god NASS dosen't allow the lifter to rest it on thier belts anymore, that was gettin rediculous.

oh yeah resting it on the stomach is a whole differant animal then resting it on the belts, your still using your body.

A pro-strongman that I've trained with several times Mark Keshishian (sp?) he lives about an hour away invented his own style to "clean" the axle at "the beaty and the beast" contest in 2000, he did a mixed grip pull and caught it in the crook of only one-arm to get it to the shoulders, "the Keshishian" is the name of the clean, several men along with Mark Philipi used this same style at the "arnold" strongman event this year.

I still don't see how or why they don't try to striaght clean it, or use a strong continental clean, maybe they do, it is some big weights, but these are big guys so I think it's doable.
