American weightlifting legend Tommy Kono

American weightlifting legend Tommy Kono, a good friend of my Dad over 50 years ago, will be a guest in my home from August 2nd until August 5th. For you younger fitness guys and gals, here is a great link about Tommy Kono:

PT: Tommy Kono

I wrote Mr. Kono a letter about 3 weeks ago asking him if he would call and wish my Dad a happy 81st birthday as they haven't seen each other in 52 years when Mr. Kono left Sacramento and moved to Hawaii. Mr. Kono called me when he received my letter and told me he would do better than what I asked - he is scheduled to be in Sacramento for a local Olympic weightlifting event named in his honor and he would meet with my Dad. One thing led to another during our telephone conversation, but the bottom line is that he is staying as a guest in my home and he has agreed to allow me to interview him. This interview will be an article in the Fall 2007 Discuss Fitness Newsletter.

So if you have any questions that you'd like to ask Mr. Kono, post them here and I'll do the best I can to pose them to him.

And stay tuned, don't take a hike, and hang around Discuss Fitness. Because shortly I'll have some great photographs and stories to post. And who knows, maybe our newest member here at Discuss Fitness will be the great Tommy Kono. He has already read our Summer 2007 Discuss Fitness Newsletter and personally commented to me that he liked it very much.

The best is yet to come at Discuss Fitness!

That is very exciting news! Thank you for thinking of us. You should take a look at how Cursor did an online interview with Clarence Bass. Something for our archives like that would be awesome.

Here is a video clip of some vintage lifting moments in his illustrious Olympic career:

Tommy Kono, USA - Clip-O-Rama @LiftUp

I believe his best C&J was 385 lbs. Right now I'm reading a book he wrote. He writes about how he got up to 120 lb. DB overhead presses for low reps at a BW of 177 lbs.
