Arnold Pump and Run 2007/Powerlifting Competition

2007 Arnold Pump and Run was March 4. Weighed in morning of the race at 173.6 (down from 207.5 on January 1), benched bodyweight 22 times, and ran the 5K race sub-22 minutes. Finished in the top 25%. Pleased with results and training efforts.

Now I have started training for my first powerlifting competition at the end of April. Hoping to compete at 181. Not looking to win, only to compete, and I would be thrilled to get 1000 pounds total raw (estimating bench of 300, squat of 315, dead of 385). This morning I weighed in at 186.

This morning: Squat (to parallel) 300 x 1. First time squatting 300 in over a decade. So technically it is not a PR (I used to squat over 400 in college), but it is what it is. Followed by a deadlift of 365 x 1 (which equals my PR). Given I benched 275 (with pause) two times yesterday, I estimate my total now is around 950-975 lbs.

I will post my progress (assuming there is progress) here on an intermittant basis.

That's fantastic KickerNine! Great job on that run and bench. You should start an online journal for your training for the powerlifting competition. A lot of people would be interested in following your training, I know I sure would!

Congrats on your race and bench results. What federation are you going to be lifting in?

Make sure you read over the rules. Are you training with people who have competed before?

I'm an attorney. I always know the rules backwards and forwards. I have read up on these competitions and I believe I know what to expect and how to approach the competition.

I work out by myself and have to ask strangers for a spot at the gym when I bench heavy. Not ideal, but I get by. Due to my heavy work schedule, my long commute and my desire to spend time with my family, I cannot set a consistent work out schedule such that I could have a regular workout partner or arrange to have a trainer meet me for scheduled workouts. Again, not ideal, but I'm not trying to win these competitions, only to compete and stay strong and healthy.

Powerlifting competition is 11 days away. Unfortunately, I have not been able to train the past few weeks due to illness, vacation and work. Today, raw bench with 1 second pause of 285 was really easy. Tried 315 with pause and couldn't lock out. Last Friday, raw squat to parallel of 300 was pretty easy and raw deadlift of 375 was easy as well. Could not pull 405.

Most likely only getting one more bench workout and two more squat/dead workouts in before the competition.

This morning:

Squat 335 x 1 PR
Deadlift 405 x1 PR

Not sure whether I plan on lifting again before the competition. Most likely going to open at 300 on squats, 275 on bench, 365 on deads. If I equal my PRs, I should easily total over 1000.
