pushups, pullups, burpees, running, jump rope, heavy bag work.

...and as already stated, qualified instruction. With proper training, those xtreme tris should let you be a good puncher.

If you are really in to boxing, go hang out at Your Top Source For Free Boxing Training Advice.

But don't make any stupid posts there or Ross Enamait will post dust you in a heart beat.

I like to use the cable machine at about shoulder height and practice throwing with some weight.

Goose? If you're doing that, what would your eccentric return be like? If you were to do punches holding DB's you could essentially throw power behind the move, but with cables, there's a risk of bouncing or the cable doubling up, so what would you recommend regarding the return? Do you throws/punches unilaterally or bilaterally, how much force behind the throw, and how do you handle the return of the weight to maximize its benefit in terms of translating this training over to a functional way with boxing?

I'm interested in this not just in terms of boxing but also martial arts.

What are your thoughts/experience?

While not a beginner exercise, Ross Enamait's triple clap plyometric pushup has always impressed me big time, and is indicative of someone who has strong and fast punching power.

Enjoy!

They dont bind up because I do them relatively slow and controlled. I used to use dumbells, but ever since my cousin got bad tendinitis in his elbows from doing that, I decided to stop.

So you'd use weight on the heavy side and throw hard or controlled? And on the return, you indicated it's a slow return, so the primary focus is on the throw?

I can see where DB's can aggrivate the elbow due to gravity pulling downwards, where-as cables (which I'm so fond of).

My final question (my first) is how much intensity do you put behind the throw?

Its a slow controlled movement, but not too slow. I focus on building the muscles and not the intensity required to throw an actual punch. Thats done on the heavy bags.

Thanks. I don't do bag work with my clients, but thanks for the info re: the cable exercises.
