Caution to Powerlifters

A few years ago we used to get a couple of powerlifters down our gym and they were as powerlifters are, big. Just recenlty one the lads who I knew resonably well was doing squats at his place I believe and his knees apparently shot through his legs ( probably dislocated) and he has never been able to squat really ever since that. The word is be very wise in warming up to anything heavy or you could suffer from the same fate. Even tearing or popping a bicep. Be smart, be wise out there, warm-up properly.:

I would agree with warming up properly, i grab a weight that is 25% of my 1rm and i do 30reps with it so that i can make sure i have got blood pumping through, joints are properly sufficiently stimulated and i'm ready to rock. :

takes me a minimum of 20 minutes to warm up - sometimes closer to 30

ALTHOUGH for him to suffer damage like that smacks of poor form, not failure to warm up.

Warming up takes a good 20-30 minutes at least, and the workout takes about 5-10 lol. Gotta love powerlifting

Yeah it sounds like he put on a few hundred pounds more than he could squat lol. Probably one of those people that thinks since they can leg press 500, they can squat it too.

Talking of squats. I did hack squating today and I was wondering are you just meant to go parallel with your thighs or a full deep squat?

at least to parallel, but the lower the better. keep your knees pointing out over your toes - don't let them cave in.

Yeah, this really applies to everyone. If you put significantly more weight on the bar than you've ever done before without easing up to it to make sure you can handle it, you're bound to get hurt.

I haven't really played with hack squats all that much, a few sets here and there, but isn't there pretty much one position for your legs? I mean holding the bar behind you isn't easy and doesn't leave much room for playing with form lol. At least that's what I found out.

I suppose also that the deeper you go the lighter you should go as well? If not you could get into trouble.

nope - with all exercises, you use the weight you can handle. for some ppl, this means lightening the weight, but it shouldn't.

Whenever I go heavier in squats, I seem to go deeper. It just kinda shoves me down there lol.
