Is the sumo deadlift any good? I saw that featured once in Muscle & Fitness. I have done deadlifts a few times in the past but what REALLY scares me being tall is not the lift but....the lowering. Any advice on that please?

Don't get cute with the negative. Just control the descent of the bar w/o outright dropping it. Most gyms have pretty sturdy floors and rubber mats to absorb the shock of a rapidly descending, fully loaded barbell.

The lift is over after you lock it out. Most of the guys at my powerlifting gym hold onto the weight but they dont resist much at all when they set it down. It does make a decently loud noise when they bring it down but I'd rather do that than injure myself trying to set it down quietly .

We have a couple of guys down the gym and one of them a friend of mine is abodybuilder but I can see he's no chance of winning because he's not ripped and defined enough. A good bodybuilder should be able to see what needs attention. He's probably taken too much in the way of steroids and just looks too inflated with spot scars on his back. What's more he and his training partners irritatingly drop the heavy bar when finishing their deadlifts.

depends how far out from contest he is - on the whole, bodybuilders tend not to be ripped and lean year-round.
as for dropping the bar, so what? if he and his friends are doing the work, then i figure they're entitled. what irritates me is someone doing a dieselweasel - bad form, working ego, not muscles, then throwing the bar down and looking around with a smirk. at the gym i'm working out temporarily (the really really nice one) they have a special floor at the weight section and the plates are all coated in rubber. throw it down all you want, all you'll get is a muffled 'thud'.0...

After some careful consideration, I'm changing my answer. The best overall lift is, by far, the biceps curl. It must be, since that's the only thing 80 percent of the guys at my gym do.
 Heh.

Is there anybody at your gym that knows how to do them (OK, everyone stop laughing now ) and can show you? I couldn't get the form at all from the video, I had to have someone teach it to me. I think it's a tricky lift until you get used to it.
