Have you ever seen a chiropractor? I know some people are totally anti-chiropractor but if it werent for mine, I wouldnt be walking upright.
I stay away from the Smith machine because I nearly totally screwed up my back using it last October. I didnt have a spotter and I went to hook the bar back on the rack and missed, and all the weight came down on me and my back arched way back and I heard about three crack/pops in my back. Thank God I did this when my back muscles were much better than they were 3-4 months before, otherwise I'd probably be in the hospital.
In any event my chiropractor fixed me up after about three adjustments. But it still took me about two months before the pain went away entirely. and like I said, call me chicken, but I'll never use that machine again. Regular squats using hand weights will do me just fine
Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

^^^ HOLY CRAPOLA!!! I think I am gonna have to go to the chiropractor to be readjusted just from reading your post....I felt that as I read it...
DAMNNNNN....
But glad you are ok now...Take it easy and I kinda agree with you on the "chicken" to use that machine again...But then again, they always say...When you fall off a horse, get back on it...
Whatever you do...BE CAREFUL!!!

actually my chiropractor told me to stay away from that machine. I have upper neck issues as it is and he said that machine puts undue pressure on the top of your spine that is not good for you anyway and that doing regular squats with hand held weights will do the job that squats are meant to do: work your leg muscles (and not screw up your neck)!

Yeah, to use a smith machine you have to put your feet WAAAAYYYY out in front of you and "lean back" into the bar with the top of the traps. This keeps it from putting undue stress on the neck and lower back.
I do cringe often when I am in the power cage and see people in the smith machine next to me using it improperly...I can almost feel the pain they will eventually have.

Free squats are better than the smith machine anyway. You get more stabilizing muscles, and it is more natural to your body. If you are going to squat something in real life, outside of the gym, you won't have a smith machine handy to help you stabilize the weight.

I`m sorry Mrs.v. it was meant as a compliment only. none of my sisters would be able to move a 135lbs bar off the ground. You should be proud of your age!

This is good because 42 is less than 7 months away.

Being DL are done with variants on a once a week cycle with me, and I use westside congugate system, I tend to think there was a break in form... How much weight are we talking here? Are you using a good belt? I tend to DL ALOT with my lower back, but that is also one of my stronger suites.... In DL with my routine, we do accessories that are only based upon the lift... So, I would suggest standing gm, hamstring work and even rows.... ALSO... wild iron has alot of vids on deadlifting, just watch the first group. Becky Rich is a raw lifter, but her form is impecable as well as Marcus Wild. I would also suggest looking at ANYTHING elitefts.com has to say about the matter. The only thing I would add is heal FIRST. Use antiimflamatories like 800 mg of advil and heat and cold. You can work on accessories unless you notice pain. Once the pain is gone, I would resume lifting... You can vid and send to me also if there are worries.
