I forgot to mention that the other competitors are willing to help the new guys alot more than anyone else. If you've seen my powerlifting videos or watched Dan/Luke's, you can hear all the competitors trying to encourage them. Sure, you want to win, but everyone wants you to do your best and make PR's.
It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it, but it's almost like a brotherhood for a lack of a better word. It's like a comradery with people. When i went to the WPO Semifinal powerlifting qualifier in Chicago to watch and cheer on my gym competitors, the night before the competition, all the big boys got together and were out to dinner. The girlfriend and I sat with them. Everyone was going to compete against each other the next day, but that night everyone was having a great time enjoying their company.
There's just nothing like it.

Yeah. I guess your right. It seems kind of embarrrasing when your around all these huge guys. But thanks for the encouragment!
Ill search around for any comps near my area within the next 6 months or so. It'll be fun, if anything else. Maybe take a buddy or something so Im not the only small one.

Here's a video of the new guy that's been training with us. As you can see, his performance wasn't exactly stellar but he was glad to have done the competition and is looking forward to the Maryland in August. His training is in full gear right now.
Also note that in Luke's first contest he placed last in every event. And in more cases than not, the implements got the best of him, with weights much lighter than we currently use. Look at him now! He won the "Biggest Heart" sometime last year, and every single competitor you talk to will confirm this sentiment.
It's not about winning or losing, but going out and giving it all you've got; over and over and over again.

Very well said.
After watching that video i was probably the most impressed with his last try at the atlas stone. Even though he didn't get it, what an effort. He's got heart, and when he builds the strength, he's gonna be a good one.

I went and watched "marylands" 03 contest in aug. and realized I wanted to compete next year (I was dissappointed I didn't compete at the one I watched), so I was trainining for "marylands 04" and guess what, I found out maryland held a comp. in nov.03 so I did it, I could only do 2-things in that event, and that was carrying the farmers (max effort, 210an arm) and carry a 240 fire hydrent and drag the chain. I got 2-flips of the tire in 90seconds, and couldn't load a 230lb stone.
it hasn't even been 3-full years, 10flips of the tire with 5seconds to spare, 260an arm farmers walks, the yoke went from 620lb to 715 (and the 620 yoke was by itself, not a medely) (I didn't even cross the start line with 620). I also flipped a 900+ tire over the weekend (couldn't do it last year) thats what it's all about, I look back and think, WOW!!! and I tell ya, I feel like I make gains after every contest, actually I know I make gains after every one.

Boy it is so much fun to compete. I am glad I compete now for sure. It has given alot more purpose to my lifting. When a meet is 12 weeks out, I will take the week off 13 weeks out, and then come back hard and ready to train for the next 11 weeks. Every set has more purpose than it did before.
You get yourself a total in a competition, and then say, "next competition, I'm going to break that total", and it's an upward climb from there. You just keep scratching and clawing your way to Elite status.
It is not about anyone else. It is about you and the weight is your opponent.
