Here's a photo of some Olympic weightlifting greats who attended the 2nd Annual Tommy Kono Iron Dragon Weightlifting Competition last weekend in Sacramento.
Mario Martinez - silver medalist at the 1984 Olympics in the superheavyweight class. Also competed at the 1988 Olympics (4th) and the 1992 Olympics (8th). I was told he has a 513 clean & jerk to his credit.
Tommy Kono - gold medalist in the 148 lb. class at the 1952 Olympics, gold medalist in the 181 lb. class at the 1956 Olympics, and silver medalist in the 165 lb. class at the 1960 Rome Olympics. World champion in his weight class for 1953-1954-1955-1957-1958-1959. Head coach for the Mexican 1968 Olympic weightlifting team, the West German 1972 Olympic weightlifting team, and the 1976 American Olympic weightlifting team.
Jim Schmitz - American Olympic weightlifting head coach for the 1980 and 1988 team and assistant coach for the 1992 team.
Bruce Wilhelm - American Olympic weightlifter who placed 5th in his weight class at the 1976 Olympics and first winner of the Strongman Contest which he repeated the following year. He looks very good at age 62 and is obviously doing some cardio training. He's a real character.
Butch Curry - member of the 1980 American weightlifting team in the 198 lb. class. He did not get to participate as that was the year the United States boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics due to the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan (how ironic). His best clean and jerk was 434 lbs.
