Powerlifting Competition Results

Competed in my first full USAPL powerlifting meet this past Saturday. Made weight at 181 (having cut from 192.5 last Sunday night). Competed raw (only wore a belt, no wraps, no bench shirt, or squat suit). Despite having limited training time, I made 7 out of 9 lifts and totalled 1030 lbs. My goal was to lift at least 1000 lbs so I am satisfied with my efforts.

I opened very light on squat at 275. Went up very easily. Three white lights. Second attempt was 315. Also went up very easily and another three whites. Third attempt was 355 (which would be a 20 lbs PR). Although the weight was not easy, I managed to complete the lift. Unfortunately, I only got 1 of the three whites. I have video of the lift and I do not know why I was redlighted. Perhaps I did not go low enough although the video looks like I hit parallel. Squat total: 315.

Showing my disproportional upperbody strength (or my lower body weakness) , I opened on bench also at 275. Went up very easily. Three whites. Second attempt at 300. Difficult, but I got three whites. Third attempt at 310. No good. Bench total: 300.

Opened on deadlift at 365. Easy, three whites. Because I wanted to be sure to get my 1000 pound total, I only made my second attempt at 385. Easy, three whites. Then put the weight at 415 (10 lbs PR). Easy, three whites. Deadlift total: 415.

Overall total: 1030. I came in third out of six competitiors in my weight class, although the two that had higher totals competed equipped. I feel that with a little more training time and not having to cut 11 pounds before the meet, I could easliy hit 1100 lbs the next time out. Of course, I do not plan on doing another competition until December (standing plans to do another pump and run in early July, a STREND in late July, the TSC in September, the Men's Health Urbanathlon in October). Also with proper training, I could see myself competing in the 165 lbs class without sacrificing much strength.

Nicely done. Sounds like you've got a busy schedule in the upcoming months.

Nice work.

What location are you planning on for the TSC? I may be a host site again, but I need to find out about a job I applied for before I can confirm.

Thanks. Closest one to me will likely be Marlboro, NJ. Maryland is too far for a day trip.

Nice job KickerNine. Are you disappointed you didn't go a bit heavier on your opening or second pull on the deadlift?

Not trying to take anything away from your accomplishment by asking that. Just curious what your thoughts are on it.

I was comfortable opening at 365 on deadlift. I knew that I had pulled 405 in practice so I was confident that I would hit my opener. In retrospect, I should have made my second attempt at 405, but I wanted to be sure to meet my 1000 pound goal. Of course, had one more judge given me a white light on my 355 squat, I would have surpassed 1000 after making my 365 opener. I feel that I could have pulled at least 445, which, if my 355 squat counted, would have given me a total of 1100. Something to shoot for next time.

If I can figure out how to do it, I will. Most likely have to wait until the weekend to figure it out. I am not the most tech savvy.
