Random question about weight machine

I was talking to someone the other day about doing weights on machines versus free weights. It lead to a discussion about that one machine where you lay on your stomach and push the weight up with your foot. I can't remember what it's called. It's supposed to target your glutes. I've always kind of thought it was a pointless movement but he said that he did it when he was into swimming since it would help with that. Does anyone think performing that exercise would help with one's swimming ability?

I'm no swimming trainer, so I can't answer that effectivel. IMO, though, it seems like those glute machines would be a poor substitute for deep squats or lunges in terms of glute development. perhaps they have some sort of sports-specific response I'm not aware of.

sounds like hamstring curls.

I've never been impressed by that machine. I do know though that lots of cyclists do that so they can have better hammies for cycling with. Swimming...I don't know.

I thought she was referring to the Butt Blaster.

Butt Blaster - The Butt Blaster Store

Our gym has a Butt Blaster, but I personally don't use it. Walking lunges are great for hitting the butt.
