Strongman/Strongwoman contest ideas
As part of our college Wellness day, I would like to run a Campus Strongman/Strongwoman contest. Unfortunately, I do not have any funds to purchase any strongman equipment, so I have to be creative with what we have.
I have to make it a head-to head timed event to help with lack of time and to make it interesting so it will be a basic obstacle course with the person completing the course in the least amount of time winning.
My ideas so far:
(These events are performed back-to-back, no rest)- Heavy wheel barrel race up a slight incline.
- Complete 10 clean and presses with heavy barbell (weight yet to be determined...ideas?)
- 50 yard walking lunge with a barbell on your back.
Now you guys have any other ideas? I only have access to basic gym equipment (barbells, dumbbells, medicine balls, plates etc) and whatever I can borrow from other departments on campus (e.g. wheel barrel for the Maintenance Dept). Also, these are college age kids who for the most part are NOT in very good shape, what sort of weight do you think would be appropriate to make it challenging yet possible?
Thank you in advance.

the wheel barrow looks good!!!
clean and press for reps is a great event, you may want to just do a time limit say 60sec for most reps instead of 10reps?
the walking lunge sounds dangerous with a barbell on the back, you should just do a " farmers walk" with dumbells, or a lunge with dumbells
if you really wanted to do a weight carry on the athletes shouders, it's pretty easy to make a "yoke" out of 2"pipe with angles, make a crossbar, elbows at each end on some 2"pipe uprights, you just gotta make them plate loadable at the bottom, you'd need to make a couple of them for the height adjustment for differant sized athletes.
You say these events are back to back, you mean a medely? like each athlete does each event with no rest, if so you need to use lighter weight for this.

Luke.....its basically a race to complete the events as fast as possible.....we will have to guys at a time competing and then reset the course for the other competitors. Since the best time wins, it does not make sense to clean & press for 60 seconds ( as it will be the same 60 seconds for everyone) and that way its set up may not be a true measure of strength, but it makes it fun and attainable for these college guys & gals.
I wanted to use dumbells for the walking lunge but we only have one pair of each particular weight and I need 2 sets to allow head-2-head competition. Maybe I can use the "bodybars" they small padded bars much easier to handle than a barbell but they only go up to 18lbs.........should still be tough if I make them lunge far enough.
Thanks for the ideas!

I got ya, if it were single events the time limit would be better on clean and press.
my first pair of "farmers" implements were the tricep/hammer curls bars, if you got a pair of them, you should use them and just do a farmers walk at the end.
maybe you should just have 1-rep on the "clean and press" at a semi- light weight, I mean think about it, no matter were you put that event 10reps is going to smoke everyone, and then to do something else right away, you just wanna make sure everyone will be able to finish the course if it's for best time is all. the farmers and wheel barrow will be good endurance the clean and press will test alittle more strength while doing endurance events
weelbarrow50-100'up incline/clean and press 1-rep/farmers 50'turn50'back something like that!!! or clean and press for 2-3reps would nice also!!!

the thing is nobody here even really competes in "powerlifting" it hasn't gotten that serious yet, I say if noones competeing powerlifting/strongman/olyimpic/throwing/odd lifts should all go here, after all it's all powerlifting, it's the sport of powerlifting thats differant witch noone here really does except you and Jaster.
maybe this should be called the "strength" section "if your interested in serious strength post up here"

Or go with Powerlifting/Strongman, i'd be down with that.
This entire board, DiscussFitness, as a whole, is not a hardcore weightlifting board, bodybuilding OR powerlifting-wise. It's a general overall fitness forum.
There's plenty of other boards out there with hardcore bodybuilding or hardcore powerlifting lifters on them. ironaddicts and massmuscleinc are two fine examples.
And, I haven't competed yet but rest assured, I will be my friend

Good idea...I will turn the reps down lower and increase the weight.........
What is a 3-rep weight for clean and press for rookies male and female? I want to make it hard but I want people to be able to complete it.

lets see if the athletes are 200lb and under somewhere around 130-150 might do (that still might be alittle heavy for rookies in medely)
women, something under 100lbs I would think.
I'm alittle out of the loop as what most college rookies are lifting so, you may know alittle better, but the above weights sound like a ball park guess.

right, theres alot of "just fitness" folks here too, actually this may be the most diverse board around, I mean I do see lots of threads about wanting to get stronger and getting ones lifts up in weight.
One thing thats similar here is most on this board were once out-of-shape (even myself) I didn't start to workout until I was 21-22years old and my shape and health was not good, thats one thing that separates this board from most of the "hardcore" boards, and anyone can become more hardcore with their training, and some people on this board are starting to do this.
hey, you haven't competed yet, but your gearing up for it, and it's on your mind, so your trainig like a pure "powerlifter"!!!

why stick with conventional gym equipment? a visit to your local scrapyard will turn up much more interesting toys.
what about tire flips for the big guys, or if you have women competing, tire rolls? trust me, rolling a tractor tire is a heckuvan upper body workout but you can get any number of tires in any number of weights and sizes. tire drag races could be fun. throwing, tossing, pressing, and flipping assorted car parts....
the fun thing is that a lot of stuff is aluminum - looks heavier than it really is.

I hate to dissapoint but I was put on more of a BB workout by the Doctor (I still do heavy Bench, Deads and Squats) But they had me on a 10 rep 30 second rest workout for 2 months and I cut up some.
I like being a bit cut up so even after they cleared me I stayed on the BB workout with heavy bench, Deads and Squats tossed in.

This is on the firefighter test. Have them walk up and down steps caring a 45 plate or have them walk 100 feet around a cone and back to the start and "Place" the 45 on the ground deduct for anyone who drops the plate or slams it down. Have a marked off area that the plate must be in when placed.
