tearing phonebooks

over a year ago I started playing around with trying to rip a book I saved all my phonebooks and started seperating little sections of them and playing around with how to rip them......this is no easy task........however I was shown a tech for tearing these, only it's not really tearing them but more like "popping" them, this tech. can be found on the gripboard.

I started practicing popping them and in a pretty short time I worked up to just under 2" this sure became a crowd pleaser, I did notice that "if you can't grip it, you can't rip it" I noticed that when I popped them it split through pretty fast and "looked" impressive, however I had a video of a man named Dennis Rogers (I met him over the weekend) he's pound for pound the strongest man in the world for the feats he performs at under 160some lbs. he started talking about not using any techniques but using only shear "grip strength" to rip a phonebook, he squezzes it and just rips it.

months later at my christmas party I was handed a phonebook and urdged to rip it so I did, but I popped it and told everyone that this was not the hard way to this, I said that there are men outthere (only a couple) doing this the real way (no one really cared) however I did not feel good about it, I felt like a fake or cheater.

The day after christmas Dan and I drove 1.5hours to "iron sport gym" to meet with Dennis' protogie Pat, the owner of the gym Steve knows lots of WSM competitors, powerlifters ect. anyway I was watching Pat destroy some phonebooks, I mean this guy was ripping them, quatering them, ripping cards, bending horseshoes, and wrenches, and steel nonstop, I'm amazed at this man (all 170lb of him) anyway at the end of the workout we are all sitting at the desk with Steve and Pat wanted to rip Steve's impossible phonebook (this sucker was at least 3"thick, it was said no man could rip it) well Pat tore into this thing and did it........a write-up about it is on www.funtionalhandstrength.com and I was there, this really got me thinking about my training, what am I doing, I feel like I'm halfassing these books by popping them.

For now on I only rip them by squezzing really hard and pulling them I'm starting to get better and even though I can't do it in 1-second I get a really, really good hand and lower arm workout, it's productive.

My piont in this is to do things the harder way, the benifits are always greater. If you are interested in this start by ripping your junk mail let it stack up a little and just rip it double, triple stack it and rip it again, even if it takes 10mins to rip, it's one hell of a hand workout.

"As long as I look good while tearing it, who cares? I mean, can't I just create the illusion that I'm strong?"

I hope people can see the sarcasm in that, and realize how truely despicable that really is.

Isn't this a statement about bodybuilding in general? Do you feel the same way about "bodybuilders", the people who "train to create the illusion that they're strong"?

If that's their motive, let's call a spade a spade.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to improve the way you look, but there comes a point where you're no longer doing it for yourself, but for other people, usually to intimidate or impress them. It's hard to respect a 'front'...
