one more question (then i promise to leave this thread) : tomorrow i was planning to do "heavy" deadlifts and light squats. What about if I did the one set of high rep squats after the deadlifts, would this be overkill.

I've done them at the end of a hard day ( http://www.discussfitness.com/forums...9-post259.html). Like its stated above, you are gonna be done for at least the day after doing these.

Jeez i really do overanalyse things. you would think i was getting ONE SHOT at this and one shot only

geez you are thinking 88# too easy, and I was thinking I would start with 80# but that it might be too ambitious! lol I have no idea though I'm guessing we are going ATG so I might want to go lighter. If we are going to parallel then maybe 90-100#?

That's a truly impressive squat workout Dan.
I can't afford to get off track right now just for the kicks of doing something different, but after this training cycle will see what I can do for 20. Probably at least the bar.

i did it : 40kg (88lbs) x20 reps. Deep squats.
The shakes set in after rep ten, and i had a serious case of jelly legs after! I was definitely done for the day
horrible experience... will try again soon!

Nice!
So are you going to go for more reps next time, or are you going to up the weight?
I think I might try for 50 reps before I up the weight. Why? Because I can.

minime -- great job!
Dan -- its official -- you are not only a sick, twisted, perverted lifter, but now I do not like you very much. Of course I had to rise to the challenge you posed. My body screamed no but my ego insisted on yes! lol
I had to modify my attempt - back squats are out for me. I've been through two herniated disc surgery's and the doctor assured me that one more would mean a rod in my back. So I used my trap bar instead. 225 pounds because that seemed like a nice round number. Before I started I figured my grip would be the first thing to go but I was wrong. At rep 26 my lungs were burning so bad I had to put the weight down.
All I can say is -- maybe next week I can get 30........
Thanks for posing the challenge, it was certainly enjoyable! And good luck on 50 reps. No doubt you will accomplish that task.

Taken from Bodybuilding.com:
this exercise is going to do a lot to promote not only leg growth but also overall growth - it's been said that squats can increase upper body size by 10-15%. Here's why: squats are known to promote a lot of natural hormone release (igf-1, gh and testosterone) causing over all growth.
Heavy squatting was hugely popular in the 30's as a way to promote overally growth. They were originally known as "breathing squats" and eventually evolved into the modern day "20 rep" squats.

Way to get it started guys!
MM - you "raised the bar" too high. I don't want to do 88# of anything for 20 reps. That was mean!

Hahaha, nice!
Hey 225 x 26 is a great number! Can't fault you for your substitute either, the trap bar deadlift (also known as a parallel grip squat) is a great exercise! To be fair though, you need to rest in the standing position, with the bar in your hands

Good job everyone who is accepting the challenge. Some strong willed people.
Ironman, interesting information you posted in red. I tend to believe that too. I haven't really thought about it. I'm just squatting every workout because it seems to be good for my leg function. I'm having much less trouble from them since I started doing it this way.
But, now that it's mentioned about upper body growth from squats, I'm doing chest only twice a week, arms only once and not very intensely. My chest and arms are actually growing now, neither are impressive, but both are now the biggest ever, Actually much better than in my last pic. Could it have something to do with 40 squats in almost every workout - 35 on the light day, and 38 on the medium day (all in sets of 5 of course)? And this is even using lighter weights than some of the girls of DF squat with. (Thanks Gymgirl for destroying what ego I had left, yeah I saw what you are squatting with your 100lb body).
Interesting thoughts, interesting squatting you guys are doing.
Dan, thanks for bringing up high rep squats.
