I once saw a guy set a bench on stacked 45lbs. plates using literally every 45lbs. plate in the gym to raise this bench high off the floor so he guy could do some unorthodox lifts using a rope.

On busy nights at the YMCA, you do have to wait for the squat rack. I had to wait a half hour once, but at least the guys were doing real squats. I suggested a second squat rack (several times, like a pest) to the fitness manager. I know he can only buy so much equipment throughout the year, so I wasn't expecting much more than just messing with the guy...
Well, he didn't buy a new squat rack, but he managed some used "power towers" that can be hauled out if the squat rack is busy. Not great, but they will do!
A good reason to train "steinborn squats", see I'll never have those issues, it's not cause I want to SEEM crazy or something!!!
I use those 5.5lb lock collars, it's a clamp with thumbscrews.
somedays it seems easier if I just kept a bar and some plates at work also, again I don't NEED a rack however I do have a fork lift there I could use for a rack, plus I'm used to using things like 30gal drums as a squat rack.
