What age is safe to start serious lifting?

My cousin is 15 and wants to start lifting. I plan on starting off by training just form and technique on the major lifts ie squat, deadlift, overhead press, clean, etc. In addition I thought he could safely building his base strength level with bodyweight exercises like pullups, pushups, and others.

At what age is it safe to start adding on the weight and really pushing himself?

I think it depends a lot on the maturity of the individual but at 15, your cousin is right about there. I've got a 16 year old on the football team who is a solid 210lbs, he just squatted 225 for 20 yesterday. I've seen him rep 275 as well. I can push this kid with the weight on his back, though there are kids older than him that I'd rather see sticking to bodyweight squats.

I think what you've got planned is perfect. For now, technique work with the barbell, hard work with the bodyweight stuff.

I've got a 10 year old daughter who trains with weights. She started when she was 8. She's very healthy either because of it or in spite of it. I hold her back on the poundages I'll allow her to use because I'm a bit afraid of ligament/tendon damage. According to the physicians, pediatricians, physical therapists I've spoken to - once you hit puberty it's OK to start going heavy out with weight training...just don't push too far too fast because your muscles can get stronger, faster than your ligaments/tendons ability to adapt.
