How can I lose my midsection?

I'm 5'0 and 105 lbs. I am happy with my weight and don't want to lose anymore the only problem that I have is my midsection. I know that you can't spot lose, so what can I do to get rid of my love handles and tummy? I fast walk on the treadmil and I just started to lift weights about a month ago. Should I keep doing cardio until my midsection is gone or is there something that I can do that will make my midsection go away faster. I have been on a healthy diet but not a really strict one. Please help!

First, keep the resistance training in your routine, too many women neglect that. Thankfully most of the women of DF even do deadlifts and squats. And as a result are some of the physically finest and fittest looking ladies you'll ever see. More muscle requires more calories to support, won't give you arnolditis, and help give you the "toned" look that women strive for.

Full body weight workouts 3 times a week is a good place to start. Something like weights you can handle for 8 reps, when you can do 12 increase the weight.

About the cardio, walking is great. But if you've acclimated to it and aren't responding any more you need to change something. Perhaps up the intensity by moderate running, or even go all out and do a HIIT routine. Running and walking mixed in the same routine. If you are giving good intensity in HIIT, you probably won't make it past 15 minutes. The benefit of this is a metabolic boost that burns fat all day instead of relying on direct fat burning while exercising. The other benefit is that you won't accidentally go for too long and end up catabolizing muscle tissue for energy.

Another way to change it is do do direct fat burning. Simply do your walking immediately upon waking before breakfast, while your glycogen stores are at their lowest. This is very effective if you don't take the intensity too high, and again cut into your muscle for energy.

Diet: You didn't really share your nutrition plan so it is difficult to directly address this. I'm probably the biggest proponent of the high fat/low carb approach to nutrition for bulking and cutting but at 5'0" and 105lbs it doesn't sound as if you really need something like this.

Just remember that if you aren't eating enough, your body will sacrifice muscle in order to save fat which it views as vital to survival because it thinks you are starving. This makes that last bit of tummy nearly impossible to starve off.

If you are eating too much, you are simply maintaining or building muscle and not burning off that last bit of fat.

Plus, we don't know how big you were when you started. History of having children? Some of it may be skin that only looks like fat. I have a bit of that left over on my transverse abdomen and obliques from when I was a 300lb tub of lard. I use lighting, tanning, and positioning to hide it for photos.

Read this, reread your initial post, and if there is anything more specific you need simply ask. Someone will help you. Some good folks here who helped me a great deal in my quest for fitness. They will certainly help you too.

Hi jstagirl!

Welcome to discuss fitness. One month is not enough time to for change to happen so just keep on going. Be sure to do both strength training and cardio as well as watching your diet (not calories but food quality)

Lots of us use fitday.com

There is a ton of info here in our forums. Have a look at what kind of programs and photos minime and gymgirl have. They are the same stats as you are and are maintaining (plus their pix indicate that they look great!)

Ask more questions and join in the discussions.

Thanks for the mention brat

It is a predicament alright, when you are at a good weight, but still carrying some fat (especially the midsection! that is the last place for the fat to leave on most people).

I am the same weight now as I was a year ago, the difference is that I am stronger and leaner than before, and I can eat more So I'll advise you do what I do, heavy weights, and intense cardio! Walking on a treadmill is not good enough, you have to make it more challenging! Make it so that it is uncomfortable! Try jog walk intervals, then you can progress to jog run intervals.

As for the weights, lift like a man! Thats right, squats, deadlifts, bench press, barbell rows, pullups, overhead presses, all the good stuff! Get somebody to show you the basis at your gym : if you can find a decent personal trainer who wont just fob you off with pink dumbells it might be good to invest in a few sessions.

Good luck!
