Hi the_rookie, welcome!

Are you male or female. Your concern is a very female one. I think that if you are ranked No.2 in Ontario that is quite an achievement already. Keep doing what your coaches and trainers are asking of you.

Are you working with a trainer? Maybe other members here who have done track and other competitive high school sports could offer their advice.

If you are ranked #2 in Ontario then I wouldn't worry about the size of your thighs. You obviously have a great deal of talent and your body will grow into what it is meant to be. Just keep your head about you and be judicious about picking only the things that can help you get better.

Would you not do speed work because you were afraid it would affect your wind or distance? Try and view weight training in the same vein. It isn't going to hurt you in the least and can only help you. If you don't eat to excess then you won't build a "monster" body that will affect your speed. Your long distance training will keep that in check naturally . No matter what sport you are doing it all amounts to diet, training (or practice) and recovery. Talent (or genetics) help too, but the other three can not be overlooked in their importance!

many people have been training all threw summer and i've juss been to busy. infact i've trained once which was today. and i have gained about 12bls since early june. and it has affected me. becuase i can barely run the 20 minutes. i'm surposed to do an hour to an hour and a half. the other thing is and i don't think u guys realize i'm a distance runner so i'm not surposed to have this weight. for track i'm also a 400 runner so it doesn't matter. how ever for my 800 one year ago i ran it in 2:09 this is my elementary years. but for grade 9 i couldn't past 2:16. worst part is i'm surposed to be at 1:59. i need some serious trainning and workout drils to get to this

You need to be talking with your cross country coach, and following his training plans.

For a good website about running, check out www.runnersworld.com for the cross-country distances. Also check out www.elitetrack.com for some good stuff on the shorter distances' training (1,600 meters and less).

You've indicated you haven't trained this summer so that's your problem. And you've gained 12 pounds. I'm guessing since you haven't trained that alot of that 12 pound gain isn't muscle.

How bad do you want it? If you want it bad then get to work. You have alot of work to do and a lot of catching up to do.

Good luck.
