Civility in PMs

Please remember that personal abuse via PMs can also get you in trouble (or ultimately banned). In the past some pretty nasty stuff has been transmitted, then reported to the DiscussFitness.com staff, resulting in 'bye-bye loser'-bans.

what is the general discussion board?
hmmmmm

A place for all of us who have a history or the new participators to discuss everyday life.....

Ok

A place where Friendships and online relationships develop to board participants. We discuss, support, debate, agree, disagree and to a degree even argue.

Why not make the general discussion board a private board. People have to request entry in it, and only grant access if they are sufficient particpators to the fitness portion.

It may leave someone like me out cause I'm more maintaining now and have taken up on other priorities, but I do occasionally like to offer opions on fitness and general discussions. But for the better of the board i think it's worth the sacrifice if the mods make entry strict, even to me (cause of my lack of participation).

It may be a good way to keep out the trolls.

I see that we lost a number of good solid posters on the general boards. I remember a time when I first join, the fights then happened but it was differen't. they were "real" disagreements and we all debated with spirit and passion and the occasional hot headed fight. There was even a period where we were all being civil in all discsussion. But recently like all have noticed, some are ruining it for others. At one point I thought I was one of them, but now I see I'm not.

The truth is:

The general board has helped me just as much as the other boards. I don't want to see others lose out on good solid support or help. Lord knows there aren't enough oppurtunities out there. Wether your problem is self esteem, problems at home, problem in your marriage that ties into your abilty to get fit. It's nice to know there is a place that people can go. Even if it's just to chat/vent about a whole lot of nothing that no one else cares about.
Give the board back to the people who deserve it. The general discussion can be as much about our fitness as any other forum. Don't deny the genuine one's the oppurtunity of meeting some awsome people.

Well....

It goes past the line of decency and being able to just ignore threads. It becomes very personal whenever one comes up.
You know this is the Internet and the bottom line is some people get their kicks out of being sh1t disturbers. You are not going to clean-up cyberspace by getting involved in these types of discussions. It's impossible, it becomes a game of cat and mouse!! Do you really have the time to finish the heroic mission of cleaning up? If a title is never opened, it doesn't hurt anyone. (Remember Pandora's box?)

The alternative is a pay site.

I'm not saying your wrong

But you want to know what I think Brat. (Probably not, lol but I'll tell ya anyway cause I love ya)

The world now is a very differen't place then what it was when the internet first came out.

I look at the response that Tony Blair has given over the attacks in London and I stand behind his commitment to be vigilant and deport immigrants who advocate or endorse violence in anyway.

I support this whole heartedly. And I see myself changing in this "changing" world.

We on the net shouldn't be throwing stones when we ourselves live in "glass houses". And if we ignore something on the latter (cause we deem it as harmless) then maybe just maybe we throwing those damn stones, only to cry over misfortunes when tragedy does hit, and we think what more could we have done.

In our case we assume that this is probably some disgruntled kid who will most likely be on social assitance for the rest of his life, simply because he has found some way to leech off society.

I can't see how Ignoring this utter garbage that is just direspectable, inhuman and sympothizing with terrorists and murders as the best solution.
We may one day be ignoring someone who isn't all talk and may take some sort of action that can bring a great deal of grief in soembody's life.
Security to keep the "bad" out is something we need to try to apply everywhere, including the net.

The argument of "in the name of the freedom of speech " has reached a crucial point of deciding what is accptable and what isn't.
To say what one wants no longer holds the water it once did. The priority is to stay safe and keep safe, wether physically or mentally from this kind of abusive behavoir.

Just telling people to ignore it doesn't seem to wash. (at least not with me)

Besides that, who wants to pass up in putting on a pair of tights and being a hero once in awhile, if it's something that you believe in

I realize that and that's what i support. What I'm against, however, is publicly raising such a topic instead of going straight to a mod.

Hey Bronco, the world may be a different place now but it is not because of the internet. Before cyberspace would you stay argue and endlessly with some barstool drunk in your favorite watering hole (if the manager didn't have the inclination to clean up his joint)? I wouldn't I'd lose interest in the place and spread the word to avoid the place at all costs.

In that respect cyberspace is not that different. There are tons of fitness sites that have general chat forums.

I'd like to quote myself to reiterate the way some of you sound. A little stirring of the water makes for good entertainment so stop acting like babies and kissing ass to the "authority figures" of the site. People like Zool need to be put in their place. Society is getting too soft and thats why we get walked on by other 3rd world countries.

The thing is.....if enough people put him on their ignore list he would go away. So long as he has an audience (which is members who are willing to debate, prod, and infuriate him) he will stick around. When he realizes that no one cares about him (positively or negatively) he will find a new place to lurk.

Even if you choose to not use the Ignore List option, mature restraint from reflexive posting worx wonders. If a community fails to respond to a troublemaker, they very soon realize that they have no audience.

I personally ignore him now (and do enjoy it). But it's tough watching some of my friends on this forum getting upset by him.

Is it really fair to expect people who take offense or get insulted. We know the they continue to push the envelope until they get some sort of response.

Now your making me miss the good ole days when bars had their share of good old fashioned fists fights and there wasn't any worry of knives or guns being involved. The only thing that was really hurt was someone nose and ego when they got dropped on their ass.

The world isn't different because of the internet. But the internet has to adapt to accomidate the changing world.

I don't think common decency should be compromised because there are so many available fitness outlets liek this.

Besides if people leave and go someplace else , then it's the peopel that stay that lose...right?

Exactly ! I live in the west end by choice Bronco. It costs a little more but we have rules at the condo which are followed. I like that! Vanier will always be a hole of a neighbourhood. Do the people who stay there lose? I don't know. I only hear about the thugs on the 6 pm news if I happen to tune in. I sure as heck am not going to move there just because there is ill towards other humans going on and I'm not getting any trouble where I live.

If my friends were bothered by the neighbourhood I'd advise them to move out or become a cop.
