If anyone should be upset with 9/11 posts it should be me. But you know what people like Zool are but a spec of dust in my larger world that even Zool could not understand.

Too true, Jaster. I was posting here regularly then, and I remember how it hit you personally. You picked up pieces of our freedom being tossed, and I know you took a personal loss as well. I don't think anyone here can relate to that kind of intensity.

Not like you can pick and choose which fires to put out .... "in the real world."

It would still bother me personally, it would still be rather disgusting.

However it does bother me even more knowing that this hits you in some way. Just like it would bother me if it was any other of my friends. (real life or not)

Look at it this way, if we were to switch positions. How would you react? You know the mere senseless chats going on would be quite concerning. Actually I would think you'd probably have an even stronger reaction, and you hold back quite a bit now.

Which is not really fair cause you shouldn't have to hold back

Hey bronco does the fact that a thread is about 9/11 bother you or is it just the kind of insensitive posts on the 9/11 forums that bother you? yes certain posts by zool have been in very bad taste but does it mean 9/11 is a taboo subject that shouldn't be mentioned on these forums?

As a subject for a post in itself , it doesn't bother, neither does hitler, nazi camps, terrorists and other tragedies.

9/11 happened and it's a reality.

The insensitive posts bother me ...but especially those tasteless posts bother me even more, because there is no purpose to them except upsetting people.

This was not the intent behind free speech. If people are going to be ignorant enough to believe a bunch of malarchy and try to push it down other people's throats as way of protest, at least have the decency to do with as much compassion and respect as you possibly can.

The "real" harsh reality that came from 9/11 was the loss of life and the suffering of families and friends of the present people that try to pick up the peices for the rest of their lives.

It's not up to them to ignore, it's up to people to be respectful , sensitive enough to understand.

Asking someone to ignore, is like asking them to forget what happened.

It's not fair to ask of that!

knowing what you went through made it a lot worse, but i'd still be shocked and horrified. i have a very blunt way of speaking that often upsets ppl without my intending it, so i try to moderate my tone to at least reasonable "meeting someone in a public place like hte library or the grocery store" level. i don't understand why just because someone's sitting at the computer in their underwear, it means they're not required to exercise common civility.

i wasn't kidding when i said my kids received the exact same consequences for foul-mouthing someone on the internet as they did for doing it in person. it took a long while, but #1 daughter finally realized that how she was speaking to the ppl on her contact list was being reflected in how they treated her when they met up at school. had i not taken the rather drastic measures i did, she'd've been nothing more than yet another camwhore with a "rep" she wouldn't have deserved.

there's another thing to think about: six degrees of separation. let's assume i spoke to others the way zool does. on another board i hang out on, there is someone who lives a half-hour from me who used to work out at my gym and has a lot of relatives living in my VERY small town. how long would it take before i got a reputation as a foul-mouthed troll and how likely would it be that anyone would consider me for hiring, etc?

What people forget is that some people like to hurt people. They do this because they don't feel good about themselves. You know low self esteem and all. Here is a perfect place for them because most people on this type of forum are empowered. If they can make them mad that makes them feel even better but if you can make them look bad, they will look for a new target.
The easiest way to win an argument or debate is to have the person you are agianst attack you on a personal level or start yelling and cusing.

I don't think anyone would say the same sort of crap to Jaster's face . The internet get's rid of the consequences of making moronic comments, so people feel like they can get away with anyting.

With respect to senseless comments, I think that we all make them from time to time. Some degree of tolerance makes sense -- no? I've noticed that my initial reflex to some posts is inappropriate. Mulling over the post a bit helps tweak the perspective a bit. Very frequently I can brush off a rediculous comment when I "consider the source." Many posts simply don't deserve a response -- and certainly not a swift, reflexive and angry one.

As far as subject matter goes for General Chat, it's really difficult to say, "We can address this group of topics, but these others are taboo, because they'll offend." Some people are offended by discussions about 9/11, and it's understandable. Others may find that any discussion about alcoholism touches a nerve because their father was/is a drunk bastard. How might people who've lost a loved one to lung cancer respond to a post that says, "Those idiots deserve what they get ... they should have known what was in store for them." Even if the post is tempered with more mild language, it can still seem inflamatory to those sensitively connected to the issue.

More important than expecting Moderators to babysit forum discussions/arguments is the need for the DiscussFitness.com community to shape the flavor of communication. Responsible and mature PMing can seriously contribute to the forum culture and help shape the flavor of dissusion.

When things get way out of line, don't stoke the fire by tossing in more fuel -- not in the public forum, nor by using PMs. If all else fails, after making an honest and mature attempt to rationalize with the percieved offender, then responsibly PM a Moderator with the information. Be sure and provide enough information that the Mod can actually address the complaint.

Please note that in the near future we'll be adding a number of new Moderators to help with the time-consuming chore of traffic control and dispute resolution. In the meantime, thanks for your patience.
