McCain's speech was OK. Better than what I've seen from him before. But the more I think about what he did as a P.O.W., refusing his captors offer for early release because of his high ranking military father, refusing to go before his comrades that had been there longer than he, refusing to give up information in the face of torture and interrogation; spending 5+ years broken and beaten in a 4x6 box... he's a true war hero and America has never seen the likes of him before in a president.
I also like how he said he hated war because of that, because of how he never got to see his father, and because of how his grandfather died when returning from war.

Anybody catch Obama on the Oreilly Factor last night? It seems those dems only go on his show when they know they are in trouble, otherwise they are happy to dump on Fox news. Hillary gave him an interview as a last attempt as well.

Amen, McCain is truly a hero, truly and inspiration. Even the most ardent liberal will have to agree. I don't know that I'd have the strength to do what he did.....

I agree that he isn't as eloquent of a speaker as some people like, ahem, me. Just kidding.
If we are looking for charm and smoothness, we need to look no further than here with our beloved Firehawk. Again just kidding.
I thought his speech was best when he was describing his POW experiences. All of a sudden it seemed surreal and quiet. That was when he was speaking from his heart rather than from the teleprompter.
I like to read about the strength PRs that people share here, admiring them for their accomplishments. But as impressive as they are to me, they hardly compare to the strength John McCain had to endure the torture he experienced. Makes me realize how weak I really am.

One thing I have to give McCain is that he is absolutely a true hero, having gone through all that. In another viewpoint, I was reading some of his biography and he apparently had crashed a couple planes learning to fly, then of course got shot down and became a POW...the man is cursed! Didn't he just fight off cancer as well or am I confusing him with someone else?

dont' you spend bundles on pinball machines and fixing em'?
I once saw a bumper sticker that said something like "what did bush bring us"?
"yadda"
yadda"
"millions in debt"
when I saw that I laughed, when I look at most of the people and see how they are, I know exactly why they are in debt.
last sundays "sermon" was good (actually I like the ones I've heard so far) he says he listen to a crowd slam a pollition in the 70's for using the word "deny", he said no pollition has a chance using that word.
he said Kennedy came real close to using that word!

So Luke, what are your thoughts about the presidential candidates? I know you're not much into politics and haven't voted in the past but I remember us talking 4 years ago and you seemed to be a little more interested.

I have about $6000 in pinball machines (4 of them). It is my hobby, yes, are you saying I should be about to file bankruptcy before I'm allowed to be critical of the economy? Sheesh. If the economy were better maybe I'd have 10 machines by now . Can't I have any fun? In my personal situation, I hardly ever go out. I don't blow money in bars or go out to dinner every other day, or eat fast food, or whatever. I sold the Trans Am! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I think people would blow alot more money in the long run doing things like that than what I have done. At least I can look around the room and still see my money. And, I can turn around and get almost everything back that I bought those machines for (which I've thought about doing recently).
But I will agree with you 100% Luke, most people have themselves to blame. People are having children that they can't afford. They're already on government assistance and still having more kids (wtf). Banks were giving money away to people for homes that were never going to be able to pay it back (I have 2 such neighbors now).
I don't hold the president personally responsible for everything. I know the president has very little say over most things. I voted Bush in twice. I also don't think Clinton should have received all of the praise he did for everything happening to go right in his administration. Alot of that was set up for him.

As part of McCain's POW experience, he was exposed to waaaaaaaay too much sun and suffered severe skin damage. He has had 4 malignant melanomas removed. But the doctors check his skin I think every 3 months so they can remove them before they spread.

We've been "losing" jobs to overseas for years, and if I was a business owner who could cut costs by outsourcing work (therefor maximizing profits) you're damn right I'd do it. There's nothing illegal or immoral about that.
What I think stinks is losing jobs in our own country to illegals who are here ILLEGALLY! Want to talk about health care? Do you realize it's estimated that the annual cost of health care for illegal aliens is in the billions? And you know Obama is all for federal funding sanctuary cities, extending wellfare, medicaid and social security to illegals.

Dan,
I just wanted to follow up with you on the state of the economy and if you have changed your opinion at all in light of all the bankrupt companies and the President's address tonight. Do you still think the economy is not in as much trouble as it appears?
On another note, layoffs are coming at my job, most of us believe they'll happen next week. We're all getting very nervous.

I'm certainly no expert in the market place or our nations economy but it does seem we are headed for worse than I would have expected. Perhaps the reason I have not been effected like others is I have not over extended my credit like apparently so many other have. My understanding of the situation we are in is that the bad decisions of a few (lenders and borrowers) (and by "few" I mean millions) has put many (and by "many" I mean the rest of the country) on a path to financial collapse.
I do not blame Bush for our situation though.

I do not blame Bush 'mostly' for the situation, since the president is often just a figurehead...greed caused this one.

The media's blatant and slanted coverage of this election is the worst I've witnessed in as long as I have followed presidential elections. I'm glad I don't spend one cent on buying newspapers.
The newspaper industry is on very hard financial times right now and they deserve it.
I have enjoyed, however, the skits on Saturday night live about Sarah Palin. I believe Mr. Obama would make a good skit too but thus far I haven't seen one.

And that my friend is why I'm voting libertarian this year. Bob Barr gets my vote. Why? Less government, less taxes, less spending, less meddling in internatinal affairs unless there is a PRESSING AMERICAN INTEREST.
You know, the way the constitution originally set our government up to be.
Sadly, I know my vote will be wasted. But it will be a vote against a big tax and spend liberal democrat and a big tax and spend liberal closet democrat. I think McCain should just come out of the closet and be what he is.
And no, I'm not saying liberal is a bad word. Hell, in my part of the world I'm considered too liberal. Libertarian does mean liberal in many ways. But it does not mean tax and spend. It does not mean government meddling in my life. It does not mean all of the things that the two main political parties in this nation have came to stand for.
