a serious gym. you know one ?
So i was bored at work and whent down to barns and noble and read some ( flex?) They had an article about the top 10 toughest gyms. it was actually entertaining to read but it made a point.
That most gyms just suck.
15 y.o kids clustering around machines to "hang" people who think sweating on the floor or equipment at all is rude. and that if your grunting or yelling your way through that last rep it is out of line and you need to chill.
and it made me think are there any gyms in my area that are for people who truelly care about what they are doing. gyms that absolutely will not tolerate you coming in and looking the same day after day , year after year?
and then I thought why not ask here? and why not see who has a favorite gym.
so pop out a list. if you got one for utah cool. if not pop your own up.
( I know about gym jones already.) its invitation only.

In Columbus, Ohio we have Westside Barbell home to some of the baddest powerlifters not only in America, but the world. Their website is westside-barbell.com if you're interested. They have youtube videos that are pretty darn impressive and informative as well. If anybody else knows of some kick ass gyms please let me know. I try to learn something new everyday and I would love to hear some fresh perspectives on fitness. Thanks

There is an app on Powerlifting Watch that allows you to search your state for powerlifitng gyms. Typically they are pretty hardcore places. Here is the link if anyone is interested: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/4420
I know Matt Kroc's garage gym was one of the ones talked about in the article, he posted about it on EliteFTS. I have found that garage gyms tend to be the most hardcore. These are people that take training seriously. Hell, I think my garage gym is pretty hardcore.

Just after I posted this, I was looking around powerlifting watch and found this article. It fits in exactly with that you were talking about.

I think most of the serious gym now are all underground stuff. Commercial gyms don't cater to people who are serious about training hard. They want cardio queens.

Mine's pretty serious. However, it's mine...only mine, private, for real training only...and in the back of my wife's office.

Yrs ago my Gym was the property of Wag Bennet (1st man in uk to press 500lb)
He had uk champion coach as the trainer to advice us all.
It was a serious raw Gym, I grew big there.
Now i use my own Gym out back of home and its just as serious to me.
I get in there and work and get out, No resting, chatting etc.
If my little bro trains with me he understands this rule, so we joke after work is done.

The YMCA I went to was pretty hardcore (weird I know) But it was common to see guys DL'ing 3 plate on each side, benching close to 1,000 lbs, and leg pressing over 700 lbs.
I just joined a new gym (today) and they are pretty laid back. When we were reading the contract, we kept asking about some of the rules and they basically said they don't follow a lot of them. Not a lot of cardio bunnies there and plenty of iron.

I used to go to the exercise warehouse in pittsburgh. Pretty much no women (aka, distraction for most), a few cardio machines, a boxing area, and lots of iron, DBs up to 150. Lifting platform, squat racks, and chalk not only allowed but provided. With a few exceptions, people were there to get work done, not socialize. Plus, once a year all the pros would come in and workout with everyone. I met Ronnie, Jay, Gunther, Phil, and Melvin there. Awesome gym.

well I think I found one in a weird place lol, my friend owen , kept bugging me yesterday not to stop going to the gym ( I was going to work out at home) and then spammed me all day getting me to go slcc gym. so im like okay, we go , and when i walk in every thing in the gym is neat, put away, clean, and the guys there are all wrking out ( maybe 10 of em) no ones clustering, and since its one of our local college gym's you have to be 18 to get in.
a lot actually happened there lastn ight but all of it was really good , and im so tired I dont think I can type the story up right now. but I will add it to my progress thread in the journals.

I doubt anyone training at the YMCA benched 1000 lbs but thanks for playing...in fact, as the world is aware, there's only a couple guys, maybe only 1 but I think 2 or 3 at most, that have ever benched 1000 and it was using a bench shirt.
Does the YMCA gym even have enough plates for 1000lbs to be loaded? Unless it's a hardcore gym, most places don't have the 100lb plates which you'd need to load that many plates onto a bench bar. It also takes a special bench bar. A standard olympic bar that you buy at a sporting goods store is rated for 700lbs I believe. It would not even be able to handle 1000lbs. You'd need special power bars. And you can't use 45s, there's not enough room.
But hey, I guess I could be wrong. But, I call BS on that one.
The YMCA gyms I've seen and been to in Michigna would not be able to support such a feat.
Oh and, there's really nothing wrong with grunting for that last rep, but i guess it would be inconsiderate in a public setting. To me it's the same as the 'heyaahs' in Karate to give you extra power.
