I've had this happen to me. Luckily I've had someone nearby to come save me.

Be cautious if you do workout without a spotter!

That is very sad. I've had this happen to me only once and it was in a crowded gym so I was 'saved' immediately.

Spotter, or dumbbells, or safety bars or

my room-mate in college made a short bench that was only long enough to support the shoulders and upper back. If you got stuck you just sat down on the floor and the weights would roll down the stomach to the floor.

or push-ups, DVRs, Isometrics.

I guess I've just been lucky. Each time I got pinned the weight ended up on my chest and I was able to roll it down my body to escape.

That really sucks to hear about.

Thankful that I have a cage to lift in. Sure helps to keep me from that kind of situation. Worth every penny I spent on it.

I just don't put collars on the bar, so I can tilt it and let the weight slide off one side, then the other. It doesn't sound like that would have saved that kid, though, sounds like he dropped it on his neck rather than just failing the lift.

Another reason why I believe in wrapping your thumb around the bar instead of having it bookshelved on the palm. Too easy for it to roll off.

Very sad.

I will never lift more than a 6 rep max when alone, will always have some control
