Merrida, I'm not on facebook but I've got a great myspace page. I'll tell you how I use it. I almost exclusively allow only those I actually know or at least like on my "friends list" and my profile is private, if one isn't on the list, they can't see it or any of my pics. Even from DF there are only 3 ppl on it.
Even most of the people I know don't get on my page. Why? Because it's an easy way to share photos, e-mail messages, and thoughts with friends and family. I just click on their pic and send them a message. The bulletins can be fun, or you can make a mass e-mail message to them all. Mostly bulletins are for silly playtime though. Or that's how I use it. And when my computers were all gone for 6 months and I had to go replace them...All my most important pics were saved on my myspace page so I still had them. I'd have died without some of my pics for 6 months.

V, so you use it much like Amanda does.
After Amanda explained, I understand that concept, and yours, because it does make sense.
I'm still curious about those who just sort of put their lives out there for the world, anyone (not by invitation only) to view. That part seems nihilistic, that's what I wasn't understanding.
But I can certainly appreciate having a storage space for precious moments to share with those in your particular circle.

I don't get the other side of it either. My BF is on this million friends thing where random people just add you as friends. I guess he thinks it's neat cause he talks to peope all over the world. I've added one random person, but they only get to see a very limited profile.

I can appreciate being able to talk and meet new people and make new cyber friends,....just seems to me without restricting its use like you guys do, that it's potentially opening yourself up to either wanted or potentially unwanted attention.
I'm the first to admit I don't get that part of it (guilty),....just trying to glimpse into the mindself of those who like to be open to virtually anyone and everyone.

i used to have it and i went on it too much. i realized the only way to stop going on it too much was to delete my account. theres nothing wrong with it if you like it, but one thing is for sure: facebook is a waste of time.

It's nice for keeping in touch with old friends, but you're right, it's a huge time sink. I hardly ever go on anymore.

People are attention whores... That's about as complicated as it gets...
I primarily use facebook to keep in touch with people back home, now that I moved... It's cheaper than calling and texting all day... I also use it to stay updated on the relationship status of my former girlfriends and flirts, as well as pursue sexual relations with other attractive females... Nothing wrong with that, right... And I play the ninja game thing...

That's precisely why I profile people who use facebook, because they use it for that. Scoping out "attractive females for sex," and ways to be "attention whores,".... That's exactly what I think it's for which is why I stay far away from participating, and associating with those who utilize it.
If people are using it for these reasons, I have no reason to trust them or their motives. It's superficiality at its finest.

Facebook is no more whorish than posing your photos on a fitness site or any other public forum. It's just an evolution of an online community.
I cringe at the thought of how many "lurkers" could be out there. Not all of the spammers are bots. Some are real people who will never post. Kinda like peeping toms looking in on your life if you care to share too much. It's not hard to connect the dots of what you post, especially if you name places, post pictures and strong political affiliations.

Ding ding ding... Or posting your opinions online for that matter... It's all vanity and self-importance...
@Merrida
As for being superficial, everybody is, to some extent... I resent the implication that having superficial traits, such as my pursuing sex because I enjoy it, indicates a lack of depth tho...
There is every reason to trust my motives, as I am being completely up front about them... No hidden agenda... No deception... Whether or not you agree with my goals and/or methods is of course another matter entirely... And probably the reason only one of us has a facebook account...
I'd add a smiley, but I think my good humour shines through the text, no...

I am a male attention whore. Maybe I should get into recovery and start a 12-step program. Go to meetings and introduce myself: "hello, my name is pierini and I am a recoverying attention whore with 1 day of sobriety."
I might relapse during the Christmas holiday season and post a photo of me performing box jumps in Christmas-colored speedos with little Santa reindeers. The possibilities are endless.
Never been on Facebook. Sounds like too much work.
I think everyone seeks attention - it is human. Some people may be in denial and fail to recognize it.

I was thinking curly-toed slippers with bells on... It'd be awesome...
I love the irony of the attention whore program... Stand up in a room full of strangers and say 'I like attention'... Wonderful...

That's funny!
Well Khaine's mission on Facebook may not be in vain. My son just informed me that he won a 1 week vacation, all expenses paid to the Dominican to watch a swimsuit calendar model shoot for Tag body spray! All he did was click on a Facebook banner ad and fill out the entry form!
He's already made arrangements to write his exams a week early so he can go and take care of his commitments at the same time.

I knew deep down inside that he was a closet attention whore, with bright red lipstick and all.
