Facebook

Just wondering how many people here are also on facebook? I was thinking of starting a group that would direct people to this website - like a DiscussFitness facebook group. A few other of my boards have one there, and it does generate a bit of extra traffic to the original site.

I never did get into myspace. When I had just set up my profile with a nice Rocky Mountain background Facebook came out and I ended up on there. Seems like Facebook is big in Canada though - at least from what I've read.

I'm on it. It seems like in the past few months, everyone I know has created profiles on the site.

Pretty much everyone I know is on it. At work that is practically the only thing the breakroom PCs get used for - people have even been fired for being on it at their desks!

Since I don't do either, bear with me & my questions,....but why? What's the purpose of posting/pictures/blogs associated with myspace or facebook? What ARE they? Just places where you keep online journals for friends or total strangers to randomly take glimpses into your life? Is it used primarily for meeting people for dates?

I'm just trying to understand why someone feels the need to post their pictures up for the public, and what kinds of things they write about and what are the intentions of the people who actually are posting their pics and blogs (or whatever else is done)? Why (sincerely) do you post? And why (sincerely) do you (and all those people at work) find it so fascinating to post things about yourself (not directed towards, let's say, a special one person who you feel connected to), but to anyone and everyone who has access to the internet?

Again, I'm just really trying to understand it,....mostly because I don't do it, so this is a learning experience for me.

Actually for me personally my profile is private, and only my friends can view it. To see anything on my profile you have to message me or add me as a friend, and I have to accept. I use it to keep in touch with family and friends. It's 100 times easier for me to post pics of my son there and my mom can see them instantly - and then because I've given her access to my profile she can pick which ones she likes and have them on her computer or print them off. (One of the MAIN reasons why my profile is private)

I've also found old friends on there that I hadn't talked to in years so that was neat. One family member I hadn't talked to in forever I talk to quite often now.

Amanda, ahh, okay, I see. As you put it I can see where it would be easier for you to make simple, singular postings, as opposed to having to email, for example, all your relatives with updates on your family and childrens adventures and progress. It's sort of like a newsletter, but it let's your family view it as often as they want, when they want, and as you mentioned select pictures (and maybe make postage stamps from them!)

But what do you think about the people with more public profiles? I'm not asking to pass judgment but genuinely I ask because I'd like to understand the appeal and the reasonings behind why people are so attracted to myspace and facebook. Even youtube can be a little strange, but I have found some interesting clips there.

Admittedly my uninformed impression was that things like myspace and facebook attracted either voyeuristic people, or self-absorbed people seeking attention. I 'fessed upfront, I'm totally ignorant of both, so all my opinions are without a solid foundation or basis of comparison.

I can understand your particular useage, and as you explained it, it actually makes a lot of sense. (Thanks for enlightening me).

I still wonder about the others who are just out there for the world,....(pure curiosity).
