Helped apprehend a thief..
.. at Home Depot today. I used to work there for 6 years so I was stopping by to say hey. I was standing by the paint desk when two LPS guys were chasing this dude, he came around the corner right into me where I slammed him into the paint display and then on the counter. He got hand-cuffed and I got a free hotdog. :

Lol, it was either grab him or move out of the way. It was funny cuz I told him "you remember me" as I had him in an arm bar.

I would have thought that would be worth at least two dogs!
Nice job. My Dad did something similar many years ago with a bank robber.

Over here charges would probably be pressed against you for assault and you would go to court

If that were to spontaniously happen than yes, however once the apprehension began, I just merely aided the loss prevention guys. Its like helping out a police officer if he/she is getting overpowered by someone.

Are there not protective laws in place for citizens aiding/assisting someone in lawful authority to arrest someone? I would imagine there are.
Awesome job, Gooseneck. :

Midgetcop and Maxgain,
It varies from place to place. Here in our state if you reasonably believe that someone is in danger of imminent grievous bodily harm, death, or sexual assault, you can go as far as shooting the criminal. If it's just money or property at risk, you can't touch them. If they are trying to break into your house, they get shot. If they are walking out with your TV set or your safe, you let them go and call the police.
When I walked in on an armed robbery, I held the door for the bad guy as he got away. My wife asked me, "you smashed the hell out of the guy that jumped you last week, why did you let him get away?" My answer was simple, "he just wanted to get away, not to hurt anyone. No one was going to get hurt if I held the door and stepped out of his way."
Just because you can, are able to, or because it's legal to hurt someone doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
Protecting someone from harm - it's the right thing to do. Assisting the police if they need it - it's the right thing to do. Stopping someone over money or property? Why? That's what we pay the cops for.

I'm not arguing over whether it's right or wrong - or even whether it's worth the risk. Canadian federal law protects citizens who aid someone in pursuit of someone if they reasonably believe that a criminal offense has been committed (whether it be assault, theft, whatever). Just as there are laws that allow for citizens arrest, and use of force preventing the commission of a criminal offense. Luckily, these are all federal laws, which means that we don't have to worry about provincial inconsistencies.
Whether it's worth it in terms of protecting money or property...I guess that's up to the individual. I know *I'd* feel comfortable in most situations (sans gun or weapons present, of course), but then again I've had ample training and experience.

Oh no midgetcop, not arguing at all. I'm sure you'd feel comfortable. I would too if there was a need. At the range, I beat almost everyone, even most cops I've shot with. On the mat or in the ring, I generally do pretty well. However, to me a life is too important to risk harming without good cause. If it's just STUFF, they get a pass in my book and let the cops handle it. It is good that in Canada you have federal laws that are consistant too. Here, it varies from state to state. My CCWP is good in 32 states and worthless in the others.

Thats it exactly here you have to prove you or someone elses safety was at rsik and that you used the minimum required force.
