How far would you go?

To respect tradition that probably "the rest of the world" (I say that loosely, obviously) may observe as archaic.

In certain Native American cultures, when an immediate relative dies, the kin cut their hair. The men shave their heads, and we women are given more laxity (I think that comes through time).

So, I cut my hair off. Over 1-1/2 feet of hair, gone.

So I've got people in my life who find this observation silly and archaic. And yet, I'm with my family observing one of many traditions.

Would you follow tradition such as this? Would you perceive it as archaic? Would you respect the fact that it revolves around death, and that carries with it more weight? What if it did not involve death? Different values assigned?

Curious....(and admittedly this is fresh because I just had my hair cut yesterday, so the wound's still a bit open).

.

Sorry all, I forgot I posted this. I just am in a reminiscent piece of life, perhaps because of Father's Day? Sorry for the double post y'all.

I try to observe the Lord's Day (Sunday in Christianity) by not working or going shopping. I did work 2 times this tax season in desperation. And I do not train on those days either. I think this may be an example like you are discussing.

I'd follow my heart as you did and care less what the rest of the world thinks.

Your tradition imposes on nobody else, so whatever you do is fine.

On a sideways observation, I grew up when people would wear all black when someone died. For the longest time I would have that feeling of concern and sorrow when a person came to school in black. Now it means they're going to go get drunk at a Raiders game, or it matches their piercing.

I'm getting old.

Yeah, what she said. If it works for you then go for it. I actually do think respecting traditions within a culture and especially within a family are good things. Of course there may be one that clashes with your own personal values and that would be different, but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

If the haircut is a tradition that you can do and it means something to you and yours...then you certainly did the right thing.

If it was important to me, I certainly would do it. Since you're not affecting anyone else, I don't think other people's opinions about you observing this tradition should matter. Why do they have any reason to care?
