i don't think joining the armed forces is your answer if you are looking to increase your fitness. sure, you'll probably have some intense training, but nothing you can't do on your own with the dedication. but its also the army. you're putting your life on the line for your country and you're submitting your life and freedom to the force. if that's what you want to then by all means, but don't join for the physical fitness aspect.

Mate if you're seriously interested in a career in the ADF PM me and we'll have a decent chat about it but in answer to your question;

Opportunities to train are abundant in the Army, the first hour or two of every day is generally set aside for some form of physical training (you'll usually not have a whole lot of say in what that is - you'll just do it but it'll generally be challenging; and if you're about to deploy it'll be fearsome I'm sure). When you're not on exercise/at war you'll usually knock off about 4pm and Army gym's are usually very well kitted out and don't shut til well after dark (what I'm saying is you'll have the facilities and quite often the time to do your own training - weights included).

In most units you'll get one afternoon free every week to go your own PT or play unit sport.

Weekends are to do with as you please of course.

Like I said if you want more info drop me a PM and we'll have a chat (you may guess I have some experience in the area ).

I can tell you one thing, a career in the fitness industry requires a good amount of maturity and plenty of experience in dealing with people. You'll also need to know just about every exercise there is, have a thorough knowledge of anatomy and nutrition as well. There's a lot of learning you need to do inside and outside of the gym, and there's a lot of growing up you need to do. Don't finish highschool, take a weekend certification and apply for a personal training job at a gym - don't be one of those idiots.

Having said all that, don't go into the Army thinking that because of PT you'll come out an exercise guru. Yes, you'll gain invaluble experience that you won't get anywhere else, and yes, you'll stay in shape, but if you want to get into the exercise biz be sure you hit the books as much as you hit the weights... if you can get a degree on the Army's tab, by all means DO IT!

Though I've never been enlisted, I think the military is an honorable career path and great experience even if you just do your 4 years and be out.

In hindsight, the 3 years I did in the Army many moons ago was a productive experience but I didn't think so at the time. It sure gave me alot of "I remember when" and "guess what I did" stories to tell particularly the 17 months I served in the Republic of Korea.

And I still have an old Army buddy some 33 years later.

If fitness is your primary objective, there are more direct paths to pursue.

Most colleges also have free access to their gyms for students...don't forget that.

Not in this country they don't . University gyms here are usually not that much cheaper than a regular commercial outfit (maybe 10-15 bucks a month difference) - but usually if you pay a year or so upfront at a uni gym you make a significant saving over an outside enterprise.
