Wanton soup

This isn't meant to be sick or anything, it's really for real. Has anyone noticed that wanton soup looks like gonads floating in a broth?

As I said, didn't mean for that to sound gross or creepy but it was one of those sudden and random observations.....

Ummm yeah, thanks for pointing that out.

Wonton and sushi are the only things left that I'll eat at THAT place when I go there with friends (they go for the all you can eat buffet).

Damn, I'm gonna miss that stuff.

Hey V, no prob. Anything for a DF buddy!

I've never really made the connection before, but,....all those little wrinklies and everything, it made a great comparison. Look at it this way, if they were real gonads, that's a delicacy in some regions. Maybe you could take a more exotic viewpoint, Hmm? Does that work?

Sorry dude. It's worse for me cuz I suck 'em (I don't like the mystery pork inside).

I also realize that last sentence creates a whole new kind of visual.

I shall comment on that no further.

Well, considering that it's proven that dessicated porcine thyroid is safe and effective...and FDA approved for use with a prescription. I guess you could probably figure out what has occasionally been a part of my diet in the past?

And no, it didn't work but is considered a delicacy here in my part of the world.

V, what part of the world do you live in currently?

The word "delicacies" doesn't fit in my vocab. I live in "sushi central" which seems to fit nicely with the whole, somehow, with living in Italian Central as well. Go figure. And I'd never slip one of those slimy delicacies in my mouth when I see what's come out on the tray sometimes.

It's mental. As in,.....psychological.

The closest I've come is Argentenian beef liver (in tablet form thankyouverymuch). But the whole organ thing just kind of gives me the willies.

Same place I've always been. A small town in Western NC. And yeah, when we butcher a hog, nothing goes to waste. So yeah, I've actually tried the "mountain oysters". Some consider them a delicacy, I don't.

Of course people around here think I'm nuts for the way I eat. I don't care for the pig parts but I actually do eat sushi.

Why do they think you're nuts? Because you don't do the whole red meat and potato thing?

I'm glad nothing goes to waste when you slauter. I could use a few ears......

I can appreciate that, but what, really, do they do with the hooves? Gelatin, like horses? I know people eat pigs feet (my grandfather did,...along with a host of other disgusting unmentionable items,....cow tongue, brain,...yes he really ate brain,.....braaackkpppthhh!)

Feet are used for seasoning things like greens. Brains are eaten on butchering day, the head is used for making souse meat (like livermush but with other parts in it).

Naah, I eat the red meat. But they think I'm nuts because of the way I time my food. Pre/post workout is very high carb, very low fat, moderate protein. 3 hours away from my workout begins the high fat/moderate protein/no carb meals. I avoid the cookies, cakes, pies, no crackers with my salads. No "good" foods. I do have cheats but they are always planned, weighed, and measured and are timed to be part of my nutrition plan...not just cheats. If I go to a party on a cheat day I may have a slice of pizza and a beer but don't go beyond that like everyone else. If it's not a cheat day, I simply hang out and sip my water and watch everyone else make fools of themselves.

They just think it's weird. Or they are jealous because their gf's are all trying to hang all over the old guy. Whatever. I do it and have total dedication because I have an 11 year old daughter and I'm all she has left in the world. I plan to stay alive and healthy for her.

PS: You eat sushi?

I guess you've never seen what kind of parasites get transmitted through eating sushi, even some of the best well prepared sushi. Once you get a gander at someone's insides from parasites they got from eating sushi, I think you may double-think your choice.

Bah.

Very old. I'm 38.

I've never thought about parasites from sushi. Hmmm, I've only been eating it for a few months now. Never had it until I took my daughter and several of her friends to the next town on a skating trip. I was actually going to feed them pizza but they wanted sushi instead. They got me to try one bite and I was hooked. The stuff was great.

If 38 is very old, I'm right up there with dust. You're a youngun.

I'm amazed your KID likes sushi. It's such an acquired taste. I like my fish burnt. I think that's why the whole "too fishy" taste sucks, not to mention what some of those things are that you're eating.

Have you tried the eel yet?

I can't even choke down the tuna, go figure. The spicy shrimp covered in roe (I fished with this stuff, dude, we call it BAIT, not food!)

Sushi isn't food,....it's what food eats.

EDIT -- Even if I did like the taste, as I said, I refuse to choke it down (I'll stick to my gonad soup) because of having seen the parasites.

From your description, I may be going back to gonad soup too. Suddenly, it does sound more appetising.

The kids were the ones that wanted to go have it. I think they just wanted to try it and probably hadn't eaten it before. At least not in my house. Of course I eat talipia and lots of people call it bait. Eel...umm no. I just can't go that far.

What did the kids think of the sushi, btw? Just curious how an 11 year old feels about raw fish bits.....

EDIT - While NOT on the subject of sushi, being raised in a hunting and fishing environment, and a waste not want not environment,.....I remember my grandad coming home with an eel and skinning it (NOT an easy task, they're really tough suckers, especially compared to, let's say, deboning a bass). And he ate it. Yep, the same man who ate the tongue, brains, and pigs feet. But eel? Whether prepared the way Grandad did or prepared as sushi -- I cannot wrap my mind around the desire to do that.
