We've talked about music, but,....
So I know we all have busy lives, we listen to our music on our iPods, we work, we work out, we carry on our social and family lives.
Does anybody here take time out of their day to read? Who knows if this thread will ever extend beyond my post but I thought, you know what, -- diversity is the key to happiness. My favorite authors currently that I am reading, (and I do read at least 4-5 books simulataneously, thank you ADHD),....are the following. Curious if any of you have ever heard of them, read them, or like them, or maybe even can share some insight. Another example of how I am so not mainstream:
"The Eye" by Vladimir Nabokov
"The Essential Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe" (interesting history behind him if anyone is interested in American and European history, "Germanism" as it affected "gothic" writing, and the many misconceptions Americans have (speaking from 16th century until 1840 when Poe was borned, published at 11).
Other Vladimir Nabokov books: Lolita, Prin, Pale Fire, and Invitation to a Beheading"
"A Nail Through the Heart" by Timothy Hallinan
Just out of sheer curiosity, anyone familiar?
Other interesting authors for those of you who like.....the unconventional, slightly transgretional, dark, gothic, spectral, and mess with your mind writing: Try these authors:
Neil Gaiman (very popular)
Steven Perry
Brian Stableford
Poppy Z. Brite
John Pelan
to name a few,....
Can't help but be curious if there are any readers in our DF family who actually do take time out of their busy day to pick up a book and UNPLUG from the computer!
(Was that subtle enough?)

I read daily... but not books. I read news, (not the sports) I read these articles on DF I read things I personally want to research for my own benefit.
One thing , I wouldnt say, ADHD gives you the ability to read multiple books at once...lol
I have ADHD, and I gotta admit, its the complete opposite, though they said by my age ive grown out of that by now, and I do feel like I have just thruough maturing mentally, but I can still tell, I cant focus on things well enough. I cant remember anything about the movie I watched last night (super troopers) I like it, I know I like it, But I cant remember jack from it. I have to re-read things 2-3 sometimes several times before I comprehende it. I get confused quite easily.
I dont think its possible for me to read 4-5 books at a time

I read mostly motivational, self-help, business-type books... or books on training of course.
Most recent book I finished was "The 4-hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferris. Currently working on "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz.
Never was much into fiction... and history KILLS me... unless we're talking a biography of someone I find interesting.

Nah, but I did see a special on the History channel about the origins of firearms. It was pretty cool but I don't think such a book would keep me entertained. I just like to shoot things.

I listen to audiobooks when I do cardio. That's like reading, kinda right? Right now I'm hooked on the Twilight Zone Radio Dramas, which is not a book, but whatever.
When I do have time to read these days, it's usually the newspaper. I am very interested in current events as well as some of the editorials and human interest stories.
I like to read fiction; I've never been big on nonfiction. I like sci-fi/fantasy mostly, some horror (I like Steven King). And all the books my grandma gives me are good; I don't know how to describe them. Things like Jodi Picoult and such. Anybody read Jodi Picoult? I'm was hooked on her for awhile.
Also, love all the Cat Who books by Lillian Jackson Braun. I'm pretty sure I've read (um, or heard as the case may be) all of them.

I like audio books too. I think it's a sign of our times,....we don't have the time to sit down and read a book anymore, it takes too much effort and time, turning all those pages.
This way with audio books we can multi-task,...learn, listen, and all while we're driving or walking.
I'm old fashioned and love the texture, the tactile sensation and scent of a book.
I like the audio versions too, I do afterall HAVE to multi task. But oooh, a good book, now that's priceless.

I love to read but im not a traditional book reader. I'm always reading textbooks for school and I love reading the great classics by the all time great authors for my English courses. My favorite book will always be Dante's Inferno.
But, like westside said, I read daily. I read news, articles, magazines, etc. I've made it a habit to head over to Barnes and Noble at least once a month so I can read my favorite magazines. It saves me a ton of money paying for subscriptions to them!

this mite sound gay and all, but ive read lots, and lots of relationship advising books.. I mean its all abut common sense really, but common sense or not, most men or women do not know how to apply themselves as a lover, and form a good companionship. most couples form sick syndromes and they just dont know how to make things better. Not saying I should give anyone advice, But I know I do everything right and everything in my power to make an forver-lasting relationship. know this sounds dumb prolly, im just saying, im very interested in reading about peoples behaviors inrelationships. plus I hve a family who everyone is divorced except my aunt and uncle!

I don't know about too much effort. I listen to audiobooks during cardio. The intensity that I use does not allow reading a paper book. So I listen instead.
Now, time might be a factor. Of course if I wasn't hitting the gym 4-6 days a week, I'd have more time And if I didn't read the paper, I'd have more time for books, I guess. But I really like to stay up on current events and things. I really enjoy sitting down with the paper. It's so old-fashioned!

That was sort of a joke, implying that in today's day and age, in my opinion, "most" people feel it's just too much effort to be turning paper pages to read literature. Even with news available on the web, I still prefer the paper, the texture and tactile feedback, the smell of the ink. Old fashioned yes too.
I'm with you in terms of cardio,...it's hard to try and read a book and run or blast your butt on the eliptical....everything gets kind of you know,....blurry and stuff. Heh.
They all have their place.
I do both, same as you.
I merely was making an observational comment as I watch people, with their iPods, their Zunes, their Blackberries, texting.......so even if they unplug from their at-home computer, they find other ways to plug-in when they're out in the real world.
Two topics, but gently intertwined.
