I still have most of my comics but I think most are reprints, I think I paided near $20 for some of them, I would earn money cutting lawns and only spend on comics when I was like 8-11 years old, the only full collection I had (at the time) was "Top Dog" and "muppet babies" I need to see what I still have, they are in plastic, I know I have some old super hero comics (from 70's?). I traded my cheap comics to a pool hall owner who would let me play pool for free all day for a few comics when I was in my early-teens, for about a whole summer.

I've got a few comic books and shoe box full of baseball cards. I haven't looked at them for years! I doubt anything I have is worth any money, and the only notable items are a Nolan Ryan rookie card and a Spiderman #4 (I think it's a Spiderman... maybe Fantastic 4?)
I've also got US Mint coins every year for Christmas from my grandmother since the year I was born.
As for these types of collectibles (cards, coins & comics), I don't quite understand the rationale behind always keeping something for the prospect of it gaining value. If I'm never supposed to sell it (as per grandma and my coins), how is it worth anything to me?

As someone who makes his living peddling financial advice (not products), I like your thinking here Dan as it puts things in perspective quite nicely.
I'll probably borrow it and use it, giving credit of course to a strongman I know in cyberspace.

I haven't purcahsed any cigars through most of Oct. and all of november.
I noticed today on "auctions closing today" a 5-pack of 5vegas gold churchills going for $7.
I've spent weeks bidding $7 bidding on those before and was able to get 6-golds, and 6-reds for $19 (my goal is to not pay over $2 a stick).
So I went ahead and placed my bid today, I may have to pay $9? so if I win that I'll need to get something else to even out the few bucks for shipping, I found a box of 20 "MISTAKES" going for $10???? I guess I'll see tommorrow
oh I'm looking at this as christmas shopping, since I plan to gift my father some cigars for the holiday, 5vegas line is not sold at local shops, he should enjoy that smoke!!!

A good cigar,....Cohiba.
An interesting experience: A wild game fest and cigar night with cognac. You will eat the most unusual foods (alligator, kangaroo, snake, along with the more "mundane" moose, bear, rabbit). A selection of cigars and variety of cognacs too expensive to do much more that swish and sip,....uh-yep, now that's a lovely gift to give the more adventurous gift recipient.
Hell, I liked it.
Okay, so it isn't a collection, and is off topic, but you were the guys who brought up the cigars.....so,....Cooohhiiiiibaaaa!

The Cohiba red-dots tubos are very good. But at $10-$12 a stick, I don't smoke many of those. I don't know if that's a different blend or if the only difference is that it comes in that fancy little silver tube.
I didn't think the cohiba black was all that great though.

I paid $14ish for mine (cig. depot), I see little 4.5"'ers at "beltway fine wine" for $10, I just can't bring myself to pay that.
Gurkhas are great smokes at a retail of at least $8, and you should never pay over $3-4 on auctions!!! at least for the X-furete, golds, black puros, masters, and class regents.
5vegas golds are up there with them IMO!
if win a fiver I was looking at the "toranos exodus 1959" on their site they sell boxes for about $85? a fiver is already at $13.
what to do think of these Dan, ever had one?

Torano is a decent smoke... somewhat average. They actually make a couple of the CAO's. I got the Torano sampler pack sometime last year but there wasn't anything particularly memorable about them.

I collected football cards as a kid and I actually did a good job of taking care of them and storing them instead of just tossing them into a shoebox. I have lots of cards that I hope will go up in value and I will be able to cash in on later in life. If not, I guess it will be a cool thing to show my future kids and grandkids. For now they'll continue to be stored away.

Flash, good for you! It's also good to instill in those kids a sense of value.
I look back with so much regret in my own life. My Grandfather used to collect coins. When he died, his set of coins were the extent of what was left for me, and I was far too young to understand their value,...not just in terms of being ready for their financial value, but also the fact that they were a piece of my Grandfather's life that I, as a youth, sold off for quick cash.
Man, of all the things I wish I could take back (and God knows, there's a hefty list),....that is definitely one. I think what you're doing is awesome and I hope your kids and grandkids really appreciate not just the cards, but that you're taking the time to stash away bits of your life and time for them, too. Very nice.

I can feel what you are describing Merrida as I have a similar experience except not through my own effort.
In researching about my paternal great-grandparents, believe it or not there is not a photo I can get my hands on of either of them. How I would love to have a photo of them to see what they looked like, to supplement what I have learned about them through my research efforts.

won the the 5vegas golds ($9)
so I got until tonight to get something else, I got bids on-
Rocky Patel 5 star smapler-
1- old world reserve co.
1- old world mad.
1- edge co.
1-edge mad.
1- sungrown
at ($19) max, didn't want to go 22 cause they are sold for 24 (I want a deal!)
I see bids on those "old worlds" for $11 for 1 of those
and a gurkha legend box pressed ($5 max) may get it for ($3)
I should at least win the gurkha?
