9 types of protein reviewed

I finally got the chance to break open my ProteinFactory order on the weekend, and I did a little comparison test. It didn't occur to me to post the results until after I was finished, so the methods are far from scientific and my comments may or may not make sense...

For each type, I took a tablespoon (15ml, about 5g), added 50ml water, mixed with a spoon, and sampled. All proteins are unblended, vanilla flavoured, unsweetened.

Code:
TYPE % PROT COST MIXES CONSIST. TEXTURE TASTE COMMENTS
------------------------------ ------ ----- ----- -------- ---------- ----------------------------------
WHEY CONCENTRATE 80.0 4.25 EASY THIN MILKY Neutral, pleasant vanilla taste.
CROSS-FLOW MICRO. WHEY ISOLATE 93.5 8.85 EASY THIN MILKY Neutral with slight tartness.
ION-EXCHANGE WHEY ISOLATE 95.0 8.79 EASY THIN MILKY Neutral, slight vanilla taste.
HYDROLYZED WHEY (HYDRO 1400) 83.5 9.99 LUMPS CREAMY MILKY (See below)
CALCIUM CASEINATE 92.0 5.99 MED. THICK SLUDGEY Nasty
FRESH CURD CASEINATE 92.0 7.59 LUMPS CREAMY SEMI-SANDY Fairly neutral, but bitter.
MICELLAR CASEIN 92.0 10.79 EASY CREAMY SEMI-SANDY Fairly neutral, slightly bitter.
EGG WHITE ALBUMIN 82.4 5.49 LUMPS THIN SLICK Like raw egg whites, salty (gross).
SOY ISOLATE 90.0 4.19 EASY THICK SANDY Mild soy taste
TYPE: Self-explanatory (for more info see PF's site)
% PROT: Percentage protein
COST: Cost per pound
MIXES: Mixability with a spoon (same as shaker probably, but blender would do all no problem)
CONSIST.: Consistency when mixed (THIN=like water, CREAMY=like cream, THICK=could noticably thicken a shake)
TEXTURE: Mouthfeel (could be N/A depending on amount used and what mixed or blended with)

And the awards go to...

BEST TASTING: Whey Concentrate. Mixes easily, tasted good.

BEST ISOLATE: Ion-Exchange. The CFM was okay, but the tartness was a turnoff.

BEST CASEIN: Micellar. CC is not a contender, and the FC did not mix as easily and the bitterness would need to be masked.

NOT GOING BACK IN MY MOUTH: Calcium Caseinate and Hydro... The CC smelled and tasted terrible, hard to put a finger on it -- if you want casein, trust me the FC is worth the extra! As for the Hydro... The company warns you, and I thought I could handle anything, but this **** is ****ing disgusting! Anyone who can stomach this stuff has my full respect (and bewilderment!). I basically gagged, spit it out, and scrambled for a chaser.

Comments on ProteinFactory:
Seems like a great concept, but it just seems like they're not that professional. It shows in their website, it's obvious in their email replies, they undercharged me (why am I complaining I know, but guessing poor ordering system), and they used the wrong shipping (which ended up costing me). Also, I weighed the bags and although I'm not expecting complete accuracy, I was short $2.87-worth of protein on a $65.93 order.

Well, hope I've informed more people that I've put to sleep!

This is interesting ... but the question of the week is:

Which protein is the most effective? Whey? Casein? Soy? Egg?

Thought this was a cool atricle that might help you shed some light on which is best(if there is a best) or which is best at a certain time

I ordered all those types so I could put together my own blend which respected the multiple absorbtion rates, benefits, and different AA profiles of the proteins (and to satisfy my endless curiosity! ). I made a first draft last night of a blend for use in homemade MRPs:

(don't have my notes so will do my best from memory)

200ml 1% milk
9g Whey Concentrate
3g CFM Whey Isolate
3g IE Whey Isolate (when CFM runs out won't replace it and will use 6g IE instead)
3g Egg White
3g FC Caseinate

Blended up this is 25g protein, about 50/50 from whey/non-whey sources. Depending what other protein sources there are in the shake (oat, peanut, ?) that will tip in favour of non-whey.

It tasted good enough to be drank just as a vanilla shake with some added vanilla extract and a sweetener!

Actually, I did. I wanted to know the order of the absorbtion rates. I know whey is the fastest. Which is next? Do YOU understand this question, or do I have to draw you a picture?

The BVs (bioavailability values, which is basically a fancy term for absorption rates) of the different types of protein, from highest to lowest, are as follows:

1) Whey

2) Egg

3) Beef

4) Chicken

5) Turkey

6) Casein

They all have different advantages and disadvantages (which I'm too tired to go into at the moment), so it's best to get your protein from different sources to combine the benefits of each.

Get huge,

Steve:

Soy would be down toward the bottom, right above casein, I believe, with a BV of approximately 47 percent.
