Creatine has long been touted as a way to improve
athletic performance, but an Australian study published in Proceedings B, a journal from the Royal Society, has found that adding creatine to your diet may also increase your brain power. The study featured 45 vegetarian volunteers broken up into test and control groups. Vegetarians were chosen because creatine is found in meat (though smaller quantities than administered in the test). One group was given 5 mg of creatine daily for six weeks, while the other group received a placebo. Ater a six week hiatus, the groups were reversed. Measurements were taken after each phase, and both groups showed significant improvement in memory and intelligence. Researchers speculate that the improved performance may be due to the improved energy systems in the brain.
