Interesting replies from 1more and HowHigh.
It seems that when the truth is right there in people's faces they do NOT want to see it.
1more, of course active people will have much less problems no matter what they do...BUT the references are RIGHT THERE to read. AND it is EXCESS protein that causes the blood to become acidic and the calcium is leeched from bones to neutralize the acidity. All of the calcium intake should theoretically replace this but the more animal protein that is consumed, the more calcium is lost. The rate of calcium absorbtion from milk is about 32%...while in broccoli it is 52.6%. ( these figures are from the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition )
The dairy industry is extremely wealthy and promote their products at all costs without regard to the evidence that shows that they are actually harmful.
I know you think they 'do you good' and I know that they are in the 'food pyramid' but that is because it has been marketted and marketted constantly for long before your life began. The 'milk mustache' ads cost $190 000 000.00 each year. Believe me that the National Cancer Institute doesn't have the kind of money to compete with that. In fact, Andie McDowell who was/is featured prominently on one of those ads does not even consume dairy products. The National Dairy Council often funds studies which in the past they could suppress the results or put their own spin on the results. Now, however, the results may tend to come out unaltered...like " The Effect Of Milk Supplements on Calcium Metabolism, Bone Metabolism, and Calcium Balance," American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 41 (1985 ):254

It is VERY IMPORTANT to note that all of the advertising that you see about how milk 'does a body good' and the other advertising claims about milk are subject ONLY to lax Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ) regulations.
Ever wonder why the same claims are not on the MILK CARTON ITSELF?
That is because the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) WON'T ALLOW THEM. The FDA regulations require that such statements be backed up with FACTS.
The information is out there...you must find it yourself instead of having the people who are SELLING their product bring you the information. I have a purple golf ball that will change EVERY aspect of your life and make all of your dreams come true...I'll let you have it for $1 million. No, really, it will do your body good, make you grow up big and strong and ensure that your bones are strong too...if I could just go back in time and get it added to the ' food pyramid' BEFORE the information about diet and nutrition starts to come to light.

...and I know that many people have been drinking milk all of their lives but if everyone ( mostly ) is brainwashed into believing that it is necessary...what can you expect?
In my elementary school we were given milk at a ridiculously low cost...maybe 10 cents per day. Get 'em hooked young was the strategy I guess.

Well, I certainly have, in my life, drank a lot of milk and used to love it. The question of replacing it really requires more information...like replacing it nutritionally or replacing it just to have a beverage?
I do consume soy milk which has higher quality protein than milk, 10 times the essential fatty acids as cow's milk yet 9 times less saturated fat...cholesterol free by the way...soy beverages have been shown to lower the bad cholesterol AND total cholesterol...soy bev's also provide the 'phytoestrogens' that lower the risks of heart disease AND cancer-milk from cows doesn't have 'em...also being male, the fact that men who consume 1-2 servings of soy milk per day are 70% less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who don't...antibiotics allowed in U.S. cow's milk-80, and found in soy milk-NONE.
Soy milk takes a little getting used to...but consider how much time it would take to get used to drinking the glandular extract of a huge animal if you weren't introduced to it shortly after birth.
In 2000, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommended that soy beverages be included as an option in the milk group. This shows that the tide is starting to turn. Prior to this the MONEY that the National Dairy Council kept things like this from happening. Reminds me of how the Meat Industry started freaking out when the recommended number of servings of fruit and vegetables per day was increased.

HowHigh...show me a dictionary, or anything else for that matter, that defines someone stating FACTS as anything remotely related to pest...and I'll beg to be banned.
It begs the question...how high ARE YOU?

I certainly see no banable offenses here. On the contrary, I've learned a thing or two. I must say carcajou, you certainly have some strong feelings about this topic—don't you.

Indeed cursor. I guess strong feelings would be an accurate assessment!! I think that the facts and information that has come to my attention over the past 10 years have added strength to my conviction in this regard. My 'journey' actually began with a discussion about 'who was the first person to actually say "I'm going to go down in that field and squeeze some milk out of that animal and drink it" and also the related thoughts that surfaced'.
#1...why aren't we drinking Gorilla milk?
#2...why don't we have a bunch of women hooked up to 'milkers' and consume human milk? After all, human milk is perfectly bioengineered for human nutritional needs right?
Of course those two points are absurd...but when you take away the brainwashing of the dairy industry and the many advantages that the dairy industry has been given over the years...drinking milk from a huge animal like a cow is quite absurd as well. The only reason that it is acceptable is because society considers it normal due to years and years of its presence.
JUST THINK...if you were told from a very early age that GOD was a big blue furry creature that lived in a tree out in the back yard, and if everybody else mentioned it all of the time and accepted it...then YOU WOULD TOO...even though it was not true.
The fact is..."Milk is good for you" is just a myth.
