Double my servings of protein?
Hey guys. I've been taking 2 Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein shakes for about a week, and realized I wasn't getting enough protein. Would it be OK to have 2 scoops in each shake, so that I can still have 2 shakes a day, but with twice the amount of protein in each shake? Thanks.

I can assure you that you're getting more than enough protein without even asking. I wouldn't bother

Well not necessarily. Each serving contains 23 grams of protein, so if i took 2 shakes, each with twice the servings, that would give me 92 grams of protein. I weigh about 160 lbs, so I'm still short almost 70 grams if I wanted to get in 1g per pound. I've still been eating tuna and eggs, so getting 70 grams more won't be as impossible as 114, which is what I need if I only had 1 serving in each of the 2 shakes.

1g of protein per lb of bodymass isn't this magical number that if you reach you suddenly gain a ton of muscle  Why is so much of the protein that you eat coming from non-food based forms anyway? Do you suffer from one of those ultra heavily congested lifestyles like so many other of the members have on here which is why they through back several shakes a day
Well, I'm sure you'll wish to hear from someone else who will tell you that you're eating so little protein that death is imminent from a protein deficiency, and that you should pump of those shakes to 6 servings a day......
BUT! If you wish to hear something truly radical, really unconventional in thoguht..... I'd say you're getting enough protein

I agree with what you're saying. I don't believe protein shakes and hitting a magic number will solve all of my problems. However, I do believe that for me, without the use of protein supplements, I wouldn't be able to get a substantial amount of protein because my diet is rather limited. It's not because I want it to be, it's just I have a hard time eating certain foods high in protein. But for the most part, I do agree with you. Anyone else have any input?

B.A and my views parallel on many things including this. Have you sat down and figured how much protein you are getting a day? If you are not getting 1g/lb then sure you can take in more whey protein, but if you are getting that much, then you dont need anymore.
Do not forget foods like bread, pasta, oatmeal, and the like also have decent amounts of protein. Many people seem to think if thier protein doesnt come from meat or whey, its doesnt count.

Right, so if I have 2 servings on Optimum Nutrition 2x with water, that would be too much?

It depends on how much protein you are getting already. For ME that would be too much, for YOU it may not be. You need to have an idea how much you are taking a day before that question can be answered.

Well thats what i was saying before. On average, I get about 50 grams of protein, combining tuna, eggs, and some yogurt. Sometimes if I eat steak I get more, but normally my daily diet consists of those 3 things as my primary source of protein. So thats why I originally asked if doubling my servings on protein shake is OK, since 96g. plus 50g. would bring me very close to my weight (160lbs.)

So you dont eat ANY bread, oatmeal, oatbran, pasta, vegetables, or anything? Cause if you do you are getting alot more protein then that.
If you are not eating anything else then yes double up on the protein so you can get about 1g/lb, although I would say you need to eat more food in general.

Hey Jak,
What is the max grams of protein that a persons body can use per hour. I thought that if you took in 46 grams of protein that allot of it would either go to fat stores or the pee pee way.

There is no set number as far as how much protein your body can absorb. For instance, a 120lb woman will not be able to asbsorb as much protein as a 190lb male. it is different for each individual.
Any excess protein is converted to fat same as any other macronutrient.
