Eating Raw Eggs!!!

Is eating raw eggs ok?
I was watching Rocky with Sly Stallone and I was thinking to myself, can I skip all that cooking and just swallow the whole egg?

Why would you? All the protein in the egg cannot be digested unless it is cooked.

Well, I read that back in the days, boxers and bodybuilders would swallow about 4 raw eggs and then work out.

I watched the first Rocky movie last weekend and he downed like a half dozen raw eggs the whole thing. He just cracked them plopped them in to a glass and gulped them down... I don't know about doing that... food poising would be a big concern.

Cook them...it's safer and like Abarlament said, you get more protein.

Raw eggs are an awesome supply or protein. Cooking ruins the protein, but only a little. I'm from Russia and we ate raw eggs all the time. Unfortunatelly you can't do the same here. Ecoli and other bacteria can cause serious disease. I often find it funny though how squimish Americans are about eating raw eggs, I find it delicious, even though I haven't had a raw egg in 12 years.

Eating raw egg whites can cause biotin deficency, however egg yolks are rich sources of biotins so if u r eating it raw eat it whole. and not to forget salmonella poisioning

where i live, there's an egg producer 5min down the road. half the time, i buy the eggs and they're still warm.

here's a thread on pasteurizing raw eggs: http://www.discusscooking.com/forums...hp/t-3262.html

personally, i never eat them, raw or cooked. to me, they taste gross and they repeat for DAYS afterward. blech.

I actually like adding them raw to shakes/smoothies. As a kid my mom would always make us eggnogs with raw egg, milk, tsp of vanilla and a scoop of icecream (ectomorphs you know). the raw egg taste was distinctive not overpowering.

There was also a time when the Orange Julius drinks could be made with a raw egg added (yum!)

Maybe I won't eat raw eggs when I get to the States, but for now I'll not lose sleep over it. (Humm... a soymilk smoothie with raw egg and OJ concentrate sounds perfect for lunch today). My immune system is in great shape.

Raw eggs may have a great aa profile but since only about 50% of the protein is absorbed by this method it is inferior to cooking and denaturing the protein. You also have that 1 in 30,000 risk salmonella and a biotin deficiency if enough taken.

I wouldn't worry about salmonella in raw eggs, chances are less than .003

Your more likely to be allergic to eggs than get salonella. Cooked eggs do have a nutrional value, however you do destroy some of the protein content.
