egg protein vs. whey protein

Ok, so if I'm understanding YellowJ (and others) correctly whey should be taken post-workout due to the quick uptake by the muscles. SooOooo, for someone like me who HATES eggs (they make my stomach sick) in the morning and would rather have a quick protein and doesn't want to spend the money on pre-made MRPs.....would egg protein powder be a better choice for my morning protein? (I usually have oatmeal or Kellogs All Bran as my carb of choice.) Please say yes because I ordered some .

Weeeeelll... For your morning protein you really should have some superfast proteins since you've been fasting all night so whey would probably work better then. Not to say that egg protein won't work, it may just not be as effective as whey. As much emphasis as we put on protein timing though, the most important thing for the average trainee is to have multiple quality feedings of protein throughout the day.

Oh ok. Usually I have whey in the morning when I get up. I also have it again right after I work out and then before I go to bed I make a "shake" out of cottage cheese, water, and some flavoring. So, that's ok then??

Then in the middle of the day if I can't get a meal in that's when I should have the egg protein shake? Is it ok for before bed too or is cottage cheese better? Problem is that the commissary on base only has the 1% cottage cheese sometimes. Then, (of course when I run out) the other times they only have 4% kind and I don't want that much fat.

I usually have around 130g protein per day (I have aprox 105lbs lean body mass.) 60g of that usually comes from protein powder and the rest from real food. Does that sound OK? I'm trying to understand about the different types of proteins available.

Although some people will tell you that any fat eaten right before bed will unmistakeably go to fat stores, that's not entirely true. Some of it will (like always) but the most important thing about fat is that it slows digestion which is what you want for night-feedings of protein. Since you'll essentially be fasting for 8 hours (or however long you sleep) you want a protein that will digest slowly so that you have a fairly steady stream of available protein. For that I would probably recommend choosing the egg protein and the cottage cheese. If you find that you can do this without adding fat, go for it. It'll help in the long run.

Thanks for the thorough advice ebon00. Besides the fat already in the cottage cheese I don't add any more. I add water to smooth it so it's drinkable and I always mix my shakes with water.

Ebon is 100% correct. Dont buy 100% Egg protein. Egg is albumen which is an inferior protein. If you want to spend the money on a MRP, get a protein mix (whey, casein, egg). Combine that with the oats or Bran cereal you're already eating and thats a solid breakfast....

Before bed, Id have a large class of milk and a cup of cottage cheese and at the rate each of those digest, you'll have a strady stream of protein throughout the night...
