Ephedrine HCl: Banned ?

I was wondering if anyone knows if this is actually banned. From what I read from the FDA ephedra ALKOIDS are banned, but maybe not the above drug. It is an Over the Counter asamtha medicine. and btw what is the differnce between alkoids and Ephedrine HCl ?

Ephedrine HCl is a synthetically produced alkaloid. The consensus regarding legal status is.....we don't know.

Technically, it should still fall under OTC rules, which means they can still sell it over the counter for ASTHMA, but it cannot be marketed for weight loss.
