Ephedrine vs Ephedrine Free

There are two types of fat burners available today – ephedrine based and ephedra free. With all the press about ephedrine and the negative side-effects associated with it, which product is going to be the best for you? Will you get the same results with the Ephedra free version? What’s in the ephedra free version anyway – is it safe? Synephrine, ephedrine’s "kissing cousin" is becoming a very popular replacement to ephedra, but will it work for you? Keeping reading to find out what both do exactly and which one will produce the results that you desire.

Ephedrine, also known as Ma Huang is derived from several species of plants from the genus ephedra. It works both directly and indirectly by stimulating sympathetic nerves. After ingesting the herb, it’s metabolized into norephedrine. In short, it stimulates the nervous system. When combined with caffeine and aspirin, it has been shown to stimulate fat loss, increase thermogenesis, increase energy endurance, and improve mental clarity.

While ephedrine has a lot of positive effects, it has its share of negative ones as well. The feelings or conditions of nervousness, anxiety, tremors, and high blood pressure have all been linked to the use of the herb. Caution should always be exercised when supplementing with ephedrine. If you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, or depression you should not be taking it. A physician should always be consulted before supplementing – he/she will be able to spot any adverse effects that may occur. However, in my opinion, if you ‘re a healthy individual and follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly you can enjoy the positive effects of ephedrine while experiencing little risk.

Synephrine is the "active" compound found in the fruit plant called Citrus Auranbium. It is chemically similar to ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine based products. In theory, synephrine increases the metabolic rate, augments calorie expenditure, improves energy and speeds up fat loss. It has been shown to reduce appetite while increasing feeling of energy. Synephrine works by stimulating specific adrenal receptors rather than all of them like its cousin, ephedrine. It is said to produce all the positive effects associated with ephedrine while avoiding all of the negative ones.

While synephrine sounds like the perfect solution to your fat loss goals be vary wary of its claims. Many of them are not backed by any scientific proof nor have any long-term studies been done on its effects.

You’re going to have to weigh the consequences – take an herb that has been proven to work vs. one that may or may not but is considered relatively safe. In my opinion if you are a healthy adult ephedrine based products may yield the fastest results possible with little risk, if you have any of the medical conditions listed above then the ephedra free versions are for you.

Good post. This is something I am very interested in because I am about to start my cutting cycle and would like to use a supplement. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am leaning towards using the Ephedra included products. I am thinking hydroxycut right now. Still weighing my options and trying to gather in as much info as possible.

Ephedrine free formulas are a waste of money. They have never been shown to do anything whatsoever to boost fat burning. Ephedrine and Caffiene is the only compound that has ever been shown in real scientific studies to accelerate fat loss. With the ephedrine-free stuff, you are just paying an awful lot of money for the caffiene that is in them for its stimulant effect. You'd be better off just drinking a cup of coffee or green tea.

Ephedrine has never been shown to be unsafe. There is a lot of media hoopla surrounding ephedrine right now, as it is the 'toxin de jour' that people like to rave on. The truth is, the only known cases EVER of ephedrine being singled out as the cause of someone's medical distress, was where they were taking 50 to 100 times the normal daily dosage. With anything, the dose makes the poison. Too much of anything can hurt you. An overdose of certain vitamins and minerals can kill you too. You could take 100 times the daily dose of iron pills and end up a stiff, but you don't see fear mongering over those.

Check out this editorial for several references, as well as speculation on why/how the false reporting of negative reactions happens:

It seems Hydroxycut has gone ephedra free. My friend bought some today and they cut it out.

Also, I notice all of the stores who sell fat burners are REALLY pushing the ephedra free now.

I was looking at Hydroxycut at Wal-mart, and I too didn't see ephedra in the ingredients. As for its safety, I wouldn't assume it either completely safe or dangerous. It probably depends on the individual. Personally I love running, so I don't need any stimulants when "cutting".

Anyway, you may remember that Fen/Phen was considered completely safe for a long time, despite occasional reports of problems with it, so I don't think anyone can say that something is completely safe (or completely dangerous either), which is why I take everything I read here with a grain of salt.

Yeah it looks like a matter of time. The clock is ticking on ephedra. FDA is working hard on banning it soon.
It's a shame because if used the right way it is a good tool for sports minded people.

I was reading online articles about ephedra free fat burners the other night. I came across one article about synephrine (supposedly ephedrine's "safer" cousin) and it said that there has been no research to show it produces fat burning in humans. Also, it did say that is worked to burn a type of fats in animals, that just so happens to not be present in humans.

I am still uncertain on what to do. On one hand, I know there is a "potential" danger with using ephedra products, but also I know it "does" work. On the other hand, everything you hear keeps telling you how SAFE the non-ephedra products are, yet there has been far fewer studies than on ephedra concerning synephrine.

Could it be more of a health risk to use the unproven ephedra free products at the moment? If anyone has any good information about synephrine and its safety, please post it up.
